Go To

Basic Trope: Somebody pretends to be a victim to get others' sympathy and manipulate them into, e.g. turning against a supposed aggressor.

  • Straight: Lisa makes it look like Marcy attacked her in order to keep Ken from seeing Marcy as a potential Love Interest.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Lisa tearfully claims that Marcy took the biggest piece of cake, when in fact they were equal sizes so that Bob will let her have a bigger slice.
    • Lisa subtly hits Marcy's Berserk Button, so when Marcy blows up at Lisa, Marcy appears to have a Hair-Trigger Temper.
  • Justified:
    • Lisa is aware that Ken has The Dulcinea Effect bad.
    • Alternately, Marcy really hits Lisa, just not around Ken. Lisa figures if she gives Ken evidence, Ken would watch Marcy closer.
    • Lisa knows that it will look real suspicious if she accuses Marcy of assaulting her and there are no bruises when the police inevitably asks to photograph them as evidence.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Ken does not believe Lisa's claims until Marcy admits that she did lash out and hurt Lisa.
  • Double Subverted: Marcy then decides to meet Lisa in private to apologize for her behavior. Lisa uses this as an opportunity to harm herself further, and have her Girl Posse act as "witnesses".
  • Parodied: Ken doesn't really mind that Marcy did these bad things, causing Lisa to keep gossiping up to eleven until she hits Eats Babies.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Lisa has too much Pride to even pretend somebody else could hurt her.
  • Enforced: "Let's show how Lisa is a Manipulative Bitch."
  • Lampshaded: "You say Marcy assaulted you? I instantly believe you and dare not entertain the idea that you might be bluffing in order to make Marcy's life miserable. Here, need a hand?"
  • Invoked: Lisa's Girl Posse suggests she try this since Ken is known to be very sympathetic to anyone who's been bullied.
  • Exploited: A Bully Hunter Bitch in Sheep's Clothing takes advantage of Lisa's reputation by secretly attacking her, then spreading rumors that Lisa's the one lying about what happened to wring out sympathy in this fashion.
  • Defied:
    • Marcy is an amateur photographer and has photo evidence that disproves everything she's accused of.
    • Lisa refuses to stoop to such tactics even though she hates Marcy.
    • Lisa is not sure she won't injure herself for real too badly when she attempts to inflict the faked injuries, so she decides to seek a way to frame Marcy for something else.
  • Discussed:
    • Lisa: "Uh-oh, Marcy's coming after me. Maybe if I fake an injury, Ken might have to cancel his date with Marcy to see if I'm all right."
  • Conversed:
    • Ken: "Marcy, I think Lisa may be hurt, I'd better go over and check on her."
Marcy: "Oh puh-lease, Ken! Hasn't it occurred to you that Lisa is just faking her injuries, so you can spend more time and attention with her? I saw a situation like this happen on Crime Drama Squad last night."
  • Deconstructed:
    • Lisa's lies ruin Marcy's reputation; after trying and failing to clear her name several times, Marcy decides she's had enough — she might as well do the things she keeps getting blamed for. Thus, she attacks Lisa, physically pounding the crap out of her.
    • Lisa was up to no good as usual, but Marcy was well-prepared in recording her lies, having her other friends to observe and find evidence in Lisa's so-called "proof", and have investigators on what Marcy was actually doing whether she was forging evidence to use against Marcy. It is confirmed that Marcy said and did none of those, and Lisa is now seen for she actually was: an opportunistic liar who needlessly causes conflict.
    • Lisa attempts this, but gets caught. Then she gets hurt for real, but no one believes her.
    • Lisa tries making Marcy look like she hit her, but it contradicts with Marcy's personality, so the lie doesn't hold up.
    • Lisa accidentally injures herself too badly when attempting this ruse, turning it into a truly Pyrrhic Victory (at absolute best).
  • Reconstructed: And when Lisa tries to get help, Marcy acts like she's just spreading more lies.
  • Played For Laughs: Lisa hits and slaps herself while screaming that Marcy is doing it, despite Marcy not being in the same room.
  • Played For Drama: Lisa was supposedly a saint to everyone. She framed Marcy for several crimes. One day, one of the girls in her gang witnessed Lisa doing a crime and snitched about it to the police. This crime got on the news and Lisa was convicted. As a result, her boyfriend dumped her, her parents disowned her, and her friends abandoned her.
