Go To

Basic Trope: A member of royalty who participates in war.

  • Straight: Robert, Crown Prince of Tropeland, is also general of the Tropelandian army who leads from the front and is a more than capable fighter.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Robert, Crown Prince of Tropeland, "Prince of Blood", is a veritable One-Man Army who almost single-handedly conquers all before him. It is stated that the Goddess Troperia herself has bestowed Robert of slakeless bloodthirst.
    • Every member of the Tropelandian royal family (including the women) is a battle-hardened warrior, or aspires to be.
  • Downplayed:
    • Prince Robert of Tropeland is a minor officer in the Tropelandian army. Although a fully trained soldier who's more than capable in a fight should the need arise, he spends most of his time sat behind a desk or serves in a non-combat role as his status makes him too valuable to actually put at risk.
    • Prince Robert is technically a military leader, but in practice, most of his duties are focused on the capital city's internal security and dealing with crime, making him more of a glorified guard captain/police chief than a general.
  • Justified:
    • Commanding the military is part of the role of royalty in the setting.
    • Prince Robert realises that in order to gain favour with the people, he needs to prove himself worthy of their trust. Staying in the palace whilst his future subjects are out fighting and dying in battle will not do.
    • As the King is also Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Prince Robert is required to gain active military experience to prepare for his future role.
  • Inverted:
    • Robert's role lies at the backlines completely protected from war, and all he does is eat.
    • Robert, Crown Prince of Tropeland, is an excellent diplomat, skilled at reaching mutually beneficial agreements with and mediating conflicts between other kingdoms.
    • Claidheamh, a decisively un-royal Scottish brute who's initially good for combat and brute force in general, finds out that his greatest talents are his tactical and strategic mind, his knack for diplomacy and his subtle psychological manipulation.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted:
    • Alexius, knowing how much of a Dirty Coward Robert is, goes ahead and challenges him to a duel, only to get his ass handed to him when it turns out that, in reality, Robert only pretends to be a coward because he wants his soldiers to reach his level of skill; the reason he fleets at the first sight of trouble is so that they can learn to fight for themselves.
    • Robert retired from the army long ago and his rank is as a way of thanks, come to think of it, he can still kick ass if he wants to.
  • Parodied: Prince Robert of Tropeland commands the soldiers in one hour and deals with diplomatic issues in another.
  • Zig-Zagged: Sometimes Robert pulls out his sword and charges into battle and other times he doesn't, it depends on whether the problem is solvable by diplomatic means.
  • Averted:
    • Prince Robert takes no part in military affairs.
    • There is no royalty in the work's setting.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz, knowing that Robert is frustrated with his father convinces him to commit regicide, knowing that his position will be a easy way to the throne.
  • Defied:
    • Prince Robert is an Actual Pacifist who refuses to have any military role and always tries to seek diplomatic solutions to international problems.
    • The King forbids his son from going to war because he just can't afford to put his successor at risk.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Robert has a wide display of swords in his room and tons of medals, yet we never see him fight.
  • Deconstructed: Because all Robert does is his military affairs, he never learns how to run a kingdom, so when he ascends the throne, Tropeland is expected to be thrown into chaos.
  • Reconstructed: Robert is the 5th prince in line, Tropeland is fine.
