Basic Trope: Someone yells out “X this!”, where X is something relevant to the situation, often before attacking someone attempting a speech.
- Straight:
- Emperor Evulz makes a speech about how the hero Bob is an ignorant hick, and the latter cuts him off by yelling “IGNORE THIS!” and punching him.
- Alice launches an attack, yelling out “Eat this!”
- Exaggerated: Bob yells out a variant on the trope with every attack he makes… even metaphorical attacks, such as during a debate.
- Downplayed: Emperor Evulz offhandly mentioned how Bob is rude. Right on cue, Bob flips him off from behind and says “Rude THIS!”
- Justified: The keyword for activating the weapons on Bob power-armor is, in fact, “This.”
- Inverted: “DON’T eat this!”
- Subverted: Emperor Evulz makes his speech, and Bob responds to it with “well, IGNORE... your classist prejudice and fight me!”
- Double Subverted: Emperor Evulz himself then responds with “Prejudice THIS!”
- Parodied: Emperor Evulz makes a long speech about how much of a failure Bob is, only for Bob to perfectly repeat his entire speech, word for word and ending it with "This!"
- The term is used as part of an advertising campaign. “Eat THIS! It’s loaded with vitamins and minerals!”
- “This” is the legally appointed term for Bob’s right arm.
- The term used is way too long to be said without becoming awkward. “Well, Antidisestablishmentarianism THIS!”
- Emperor Evulz throws a Precision F-Strike after Bob scolded him with F words. "FUCK THIS!"
- Emperor Evulz threatens how he'll screw Bob, and Bob retaliated by... "Screw This, I'm Outta Here"
- Zig Zagged: Both Bob and Emperor Evulz attempt to yell out “dodge this” before unloading their attack, and each time they are hit in the face by the other... Until Alice snipes them both, and says “Argue about THAT!”
- Averted:
- The entire show is silent, so any repartee is left in the minds of the viewers.
- Nobody says the line.
- Enforced: The show is homage to shounen anime and their reliance on this trope.
- Lampshaded: “I sincerely hope that doesn’t pass for witty repartee where you come from!”
- Invoked: Bob knows Emperor Evulz hates this line, and does it on purpose in order to distract him and let Alice sabotage his plans.
- Exploited: Bob yells “Dodge this!” before unloading his strongest attack. Emperor Evulz knew he would try it, proceeds to dodge, and then thanks Bob for the warning.
- In a slight variation, Emperor Evulz ends a sentence with the word "enter". Alice scoffs, "Enter, my ass!" She flushes with embarassment upon realizing what she said as both Emperor Evulz and her friends laugh.
- Defied: “You and I are beyond speaking terms, so I’ll skip the indignant yelling about this and just settle for beating on you.”
- Discussed: "If you want to launch yourself fists-first at me while screaming something like 'Dodge this', now is the time."
- Conversed: Argue with this, argue with that, damn Bob seems to lead in to hitting people with “BLANK this” a lot!
