Playing With / Stop Poking Me!

Go To

Basic Trope: A game character asks the player to stop clicking on them repeatedly.

  • Straight: Alice, upon being clicked on/selected several times in a few seconds, lets out an exasperated sigh and directly asks the player to stop that.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: Alice shows a slightly uncomfortable expression upon being clicked on repeatedly.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
    • Alice loves the attention obtained from being poked repeatedly.
    • Alice pokes the player herself.
    • Alice is severely touch-starved and craves physical affection. If you don't poke her for enough time, she starts whimpering while dropping obvious hints that she wants you to touch her. If you ignore her long enough afterward, she starts crying. And if you keep ignoring her, she'll be Driven to Suicide.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice is nice enough not to say anything about the repeated clicking...
    • Alice is crabby about being tapped, but you actually have to keep tapping to progress the story.
  • Double Subverted:
    • ...But she's got limits on her niceness. Poking her way too much will make her show a meaner side of herself.
    • But then if you keep tapping after that point, Alice will say, "Seriously, we're done, I showed you the thing. There's no point now. Cut it out."
  • Parodied: Whenever Alice is poked, she lets out a funny hornlike noise, which embarrasses her.
  • Zig-Zagged: There are days when Alice doesn't mind the poking, others when she does. It generally depends on her mood.
  • Averted: Alice does not mind being continuously clicked on.
  • Enforced: During playtesting, many players assumed they would get some additional information from repeatedly tapping Alice, preventing them from continuing the game. The devs therefore had Alice outright tell the player they should stop tapping.
  • Lampshaded: "This guy just won't stop poking me all over, it's annoying, jeez! I'm starting to wonder if it's not a sort of secret code..."
  • Invoked: In the Obligatory Tutorial, Alice says, almost as an afterthought, "Don't poke me."
  • Exploited: The game is known to power up characters temporarily when they are upset/angry, so poking them repeatedly is one of the usable strategies in order to strengthen your units before a battle.
  • Defied: Alice deliberately challenges the player to click on her as much as they can.
  • Discussed: "If I were you, I'd rather not do that to Alice. She tends to get ... a little bit annoyed if you poke her too much."
  • Conversed: "Hey, look, if you select Alice several times, she displays an annoyed reaction to it. Come on, try it out yourself! Click click click ... There we go! Look at her face!"
  • Implied: If you persist in poking Alice, she doesn't seem to react, but her Sanity Meter will go down slightly.
  • Played for Drama: Alice has a Dark and Troubled Past involving physical abuse, which explains her intense feeling of uneasiness whenever she is selected/poked.
  • Deconstructed: Tapping Alice represents an in-universe "divine vision" that tells Alice about her path. If you tap her too many times, her head explodes from the excessive knowledge.

O-Oi! Cut it out with the poking! That's enough! I'm gonna get really angry if you don't stop!
