Basic Trope: An inanimate object comes off as snide even though it isn't sentient.

  • Straight: Alice is trying to access a certain website, but keeps getting an error message which reads: "Nice try, loser!"
  • Exaggerated: The error message is a very long lecture insulting Alice.
  • Downplayed: The error message just says, "Try again" which isn't particularly snarky but begins to sound snarky when she tries again multiple times.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
    • The error message reads, "Sorry, but I'm afraid you cannot access this site. It's disappointing, since you're a genius. I'm not being sarcastic."
    • Alice insults her computer.
  • Subverted:
    • It turns out that Alice's computer is sentient.
    • Then, a second message reads, "Just joking."
  • Double Subverted:
    • It's not sentient, just possessed. She still gets the "Nice try, loser!" message even when it's no longer possessed.
    • A third message reads, "That wasn't a nice try at all!"
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zigzagged: Some error messages are rude, some are polite, and some are neutral.
  • Averted:
    • Alice gets no error message.
    • The error message just reads "Page not found".
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "My computer and I can't reach an agreement."
  • Invoked: Bob designs the computer or the website to have that snarky error message.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: Bob considers designing the snarky error message but worries that someone would get offended and sue, so he doesn't.
  • Discussed: "My computer keeps playing rude error messages."
  • Conversed: "Why are error messages in that show always so snide?"
  • Implied: Alice is seen saying, "There's no need to be rude" to her computer.
  • Deconstructed:
  • Reconstructed:
  • Played for Laughs: Alice and her computer actually argue.
  • Played for Drama: Alice is deeply offended by the error message and cries.
