Basic Trope: A work has its rating bumped up or down despite containing the same content.
- Straight: Troper Legends was originally rated PG, but it gets bumped to PG-13 due to a scene where the hero headbutts a mook.
- Exaggerated: The film was originally rated G, but gets bumped to NC-17 due to the hero headshotting a mook several times (with graphic blood, too!)
- Downplayed: It was originally rated G, but gets a PG later on due to a scene where someone says "hell".
- Justified:
- The work was aiming for that target audience.
- Color transmissions reveal things that were imperceivable in the original B/W transmissions.
- Different nations, different standards. The spa scenes were considered innocent back in Japan, but 16+ in the States (and too integral to the narrative to censor) when the work was imported.
- Inverted: The film was originally rated R but gets bumped down to PG-13 due to how standards have changed in the years.
- Subverted: The distributor resubmits Troper Legends for a re-rating several years later... but it gets the exact same rating.
- Double Subverted: However, when they submit it again for home video release, it gets a higher rating.
- Parodied: The resubmitted version is so different in tone that it can't even be called Troper Legends.

- The film keeps the same rating forever.
- Instead of changing the rating, the movie cuts the scenes that were considered inappropriate.
