Go To

Basic Trope: A character is shown/mentioned to have never had toys when they were a child.

  • Straight: Bob wasn't allowed to play with toys as a child, and as an adult he's now something of a manchild who loves to collect toys.
  • Exaggerated: Toys don't even exist in this setting at all.
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob mostly played with random objects rather than toys.
    • Bob only had a few toys when he was a child.
  • Justified:
    • Bob had strict, neglectful, or even abusive parents that didn't want him to have fun.
    • Bob's family was poor, and couldn't afford to buy him toys.
    • Bob lives in a culture where toys are uncommon or nonexistent.
    • Bob was raised by wild animals.
    • Bob has always been extremely boring and had no interest in playing with toys.
  • Inverted: Bob had way too many toys when he was a child.
  • Subverted: Bob commonly says that he didn't have any toys when he was a child. It's later revealed that he made up the story to garner sympathy.
  • Double Subverted: Although Bob did have a few toys when he was a child, they were all toys he found uninteresting and didn't play with them much.
  • Parodied: Bob commits a lot of hilariously over the top awful acts, and then blames it all on the fact that he didn't have toys when he was a child.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Bob had toys when he was a child.
  • Enforced: The writers want to give Bob a Freudian Excuse.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Bob's parents never gave him toys and always got rid of any he received as a gift.
  • Exploited: Bob can easily be bribed with toys.
  • Defied:
    • Bob's parents make sure to buy him toys.
    • From a young age, Bob stole toys, quickly leading his parents to give up.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "I feel so bad for Bob, knowing he never got to play with toys as a kid."
  • Implied: In a flashback to Bob's childhood, there aren't any toys around.
