Playing With / Never Heard That One Before

Go To

Basic Trope: Someone is annoyed by a joke (usually made at their expense) that they've heard a lot.

  • Straight: Bob's last name is Dick. People often make jokes about how his name is awkward, and he's tired of hearing them.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob does a Preemptive "Shut Up" to someone about to make a joke about his last name.
    • Bob sees Alice laughing after he tells her his last name. He then angrily says "Go on, say it, I know you're thinking it."
    • Bob just scoffs and rolls his eyes when people make jokes about his last name.
  • Justified:
    • Bob has heard the jokes a million times and no longer finds them funny (or never found them funny at all).
    • Bob is annoyed by a joke made at his expense.
  • Inverted: Bob finds the jokes about his last name Actually Pretty Funny and encourages them.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob's last name is Dick. People often make jokes about how his name is awkward, but accepts it anyway and laughs along.
    • "'Bob Dick?' I've never heard that joke before—Oh, wait, I never have."
  • Double Subverted:
    • His laughter doesn't last long as he gets sick and tired of laughing along with the people who make fun of his last name.
    • "I grow tired of people calling me 'Bob Dick'."
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: Depending on his current mood, Bob might give a hearty laugh, an awkward chuckle, an annoyed grunt, or even a furious rant.
  • Averted: Nobody makes jokes at anyone else's expense.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: The trope's title may be quoted.
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: People realize that Bob has probably heard the same jokes many times and avoid making them.
  • Discussed:
    • "Making fun of me because my last name is Dick... Real original, buddy."
    • "If one more customer makes the "Oh, it didn't scan, that means it's free!" joke, I'm gonna scream."
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Bob is very quick to ask people not to joke about his name, but it's not specified if this is because people have already joked about his name a lot or because he realizes that people might be quick to make this joke.
  • Deconstructed: Bob's last name is Dick, and he gets tired of listening to that same joke over and over again. But those who made fun of him instead find glee in making fun of his name at all times, to the point of breaking his spirit.
  • Reconstructed: Bob decides to legally change his last name into "Futura" as a reminder of his embarrassing past and his moving on to the future.

Oh, you expect me to do some funny wordplay here just because I wrote this page. That's a new one.
