Basic Trope: A monstrous character wears few clothes.

  • Straight: A monster walks around wearing only a pair of tattered trousers.
  • Exaggerated: A monster walks around naked except one minuscule piece of fabric that's barely enough to cover his unmentionables.
  • Downplayed:
    • A monster walks around shirtless but otherwise, completely covered from the waist down.
    • Alternatively, the monster wears an open shirt and torn pants, but no shoes.
  • Justified:
    • The monster Was Once a Man: the torn pants are from when it was still a man, but in its current state it's too maddened to remove them.
    • Alternatively, the monster was aware that he was going to transform, and decided to remove most of his clothing to prevent Clothing Damage yet still kept enough to preserve his modesty.
    • The monster walks around wearing very little because his skin secretes acid that burns through most fabric, leaving most of his body exposed except Magic Pants.
    • The monster happens to be an exhibitionist and enjoys wearing very little to no clothing.
    • The monster tries to show off his physique as much as possible to intimidate his opponents.
    • It's the middle of summer, and the monster's (un)dressed to handle the scorchingly hot weather.
    • The jocks are why he became a monster in the first place.
    • The monster can't fit in full clothing, but since he averts Non-Humans Lack Attributes, he might as well wear something.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • A monster walks around wearing very little but is told to get dressed.
    • A monster is introduced wearing a small amount of clothing, but he immediately takes it off in a Battle Strip.
  • Double Subverted:
  • Parodied:
    • A scientist undergoes a lab accident, turns into a monster, and spontaneously decides to strip to nothing but underwear "because that's what monsters wear".
    • Bob wolfs out, tearing his outfit to shreds...and immediately starts looking for a jockstrap to wear.
  • Zig Zagged: A monster wears normal clothes and even suits like a normal person but strips down when going into battle because it helps mobility. Besides, he's Made of Iron anyway so it's not like he needs protection.
  • Averted:
    • A monster is so horrified with his appearance that he walks around in a full body costume and mask.
    • There aren't any monsters.
    • The monster has nothing to cover or is already naturally covered with some sort of fur, feathers, scales, etc, so he doesn't feel the need to wear any clothes in the first place.
  • Enforced: "Sure, it would be more realistic if the monster just bursted out of his clothes, and started wreaking havoc while wearing nothing at all! ...However, our censors wouldn't allow that because children are our target demographic". note
  • Lampshaded: "Hey, is that monster wearing underwear? How did he find underwear that big? Did he buy it? If so, how? Also, if he cares enough to have underwear, why not put more clothes on?"
  • Invoked:
    • A normal human gets transformed into a monster and designs a costume for himself, consisting of not much.
    • A werewolf realizes that he's likely going to suffer Clothing Damage if he wears anything while he transforms, so he decides to remove any clothing that isn't Magic Pants right before he transforms.
  • Exploited: The monster is a hot woman who only vaguely looks inhuman. Everything else is Fanservice that she actively employs to deal with her enemies and other annoying individuals.
  • Defied: A monster is actually modest and can't fathom the idea of not wearing clothes.
  • Discussed: Bob and Alice are reading a comic and discuss how silly this trope is after seeing a creature wearing undies.
  • Conversed:
Bob: "You know, for a moment I thought this monster dude would be a major badass... And then I saw the Goofy Print Underwear and all hopes of it were gone".
Alice: Really?! I still think he's rather cool! ...In a silly kind of way.
  • Implied: A monster is never fully seen because Nothing Is Scarier but one character does give a brief description: "It was horrible! It was big, ugly, and might've been wearing scraps of clothing. It was hard ot tell."
  • Deconstructed:
    • The monster questions his choice of attire, realizing that there is no practical purpose...
    • It gets cold outside, and the monster's lack of outfit makes him susceptible to the low temperatures.
  • Reconstructed:
    • ... Then again, a monster would look pretty silly in a full suit. He decides to stick with what he has.
    • The monster is covered in fur/feathers, or otherwise has ways to maintain an appropriate body temperature even in cold weather.
  • Played For Laughs:
  • Played For Drama:
    • A monster has Abusive Parents who treated him like an animal, thus, he lived his entire life with only shreds to wear, never fully realizing the concept of clothes.
    • The torn loincloth is the last reminder that this monster Was Once a Man.
