Playing With / Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!

Go To

Basic Trope: A character explains something, thinking all is fine, only to realize that the opposite is true, often mid-sentence.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob are sneaking through corridors and hear odd whirring. Bob is uneasy.
Alice: Don't worry, they can't see us here. They're too big to fit in here, so they send their hunting machines, the Whirrers. They're called this because... Oh, Crap!
  • Exaggerated: Upon realizing what she just said, Alice has a Freak Out.
  • Downplayed:
...Whirrers. They're called this, because... ah, so that's what's making this noise.
  • Justified: Alice has good understanding of theory, but she has never heard Whirrers before, so it takes a while for her to connect the dots.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice and Bob come across a blue orb of light and stop to think.
Alice: We need to find the Amazinglight. You should recognize it easily - blue, shining orb... Oh yeah!
    • Alice explains to Bob in a panicked manner how screwed they are only to realize as she is saying it out loud that things are far less dire than they seemed to be.
Alice: WE'RE DOOMED! WE'RE DOOMED AND IT'S ALL MY FAULT! I just alerted the Whirrers to our location, and we can't even get out of the room because this weapons crate is blocking th- wait. Weapons crate. Full of Weapons. ...Phew!
  • Subverted: Alice explains the Whirrers and pauses for a moment, but fails to connect it with sounds she's hearing and simply says "let's move on".
  • Double Subverted: A moment later:
Bob: Wait, did you say "whirring sounds"?
Alice: Yeah, I did, why... Oh, Crap!
  • Parodied: Alice is pouring sauce on her pancakes.
Alice: Funny thing, it was the same bottle of sauce that was used in its advertisement. Anyway, did you know that the adverts are using motor oil instead of... *looks at her plate* NOOOOOOOO!!!
  • Zig Zagged: Upon realizing the danger, Bob thinks of a plan, to Alice's relief. That relief vanishes when Bob realizes the problem with the idea. But then he think of a solution to that problem. Before realizing it's not enough. Then he thinks of a way to combat that. Then realizes that a new problem is at hand with that. Then he finds a solution to that problem....
  • Averted: Alice realizes outright what the sounds mean.
  • Enforced:
Producer: But how will the viewers know what the Whirrers are?
Writer: We'll have Alice explain that.
Producer: But it will ruin all the surprise!
Writer: So... we'll have her explain that just a moment before the Whirrers find them.
  • Lampshaded:
    Alice: (...) whirring... Oh, Crap!.
    * the Whirrer shows up*
Bob: Yeah, took you a while to figure this one out.
  • Invoked:
    • The Whirrers wait until Alice starts explaining her plan to Bob before making their presence known.
    • Bob The Mole knows about the Whirrers and tricked Alice into explaining them just to let it sink in, and see her reaction. He also makes a mental note to taunt her about it once she'll find out.
  • Exploited: Bob, now knowing about the Whirrers, has a few precious seconds to prepare for their attack, negating surprise the villain was going for.
  • Defied: Alice lists all of villain's mooks they may encounter before entering the lair.
  • Discussed:
Bob: You know, this sound... I'm not sure if I want to think about it.
Alice: Yeah... we may arrive at quite an unhappy conclusion.
  • Conversed: Claire and Dan are watching the show and hear the sound, then Alice, the hero, starts explaining.
Dan: Yeah, I know what it is...
    *Alice says "Oh, Crap!"*
    Claire: Now she does too.
  • Implied: Bob tells the story of his and Alice's encounter with Whirrers as an anecdote in a bar.
  • Deconstructed: Later, Alice berates herself for not realizing what she was facing sooner, and remembers the sounds made by all the mooks by heart, so that none may surprise her later.
  • Reconstructed: She didn't think to remember that Whirrers are sound-activated, and so she starts explaining to another rookie, Cass, what they are right in front of one, before getting to this one element and going "oh crap".
  • Played For Laughs: After Alice's realization, Bob is running away from a Whirrer, and Alice is running away from furious Bob.
Bob: How could you possibly not realize what you're talking about?!
  • Played For Drama: Alice's loud "Oh, Crap!" makes the villain realize that his surprise had been blown and he launches his attack.
