Basic Trope: A fanfiction that is set in a different location and with different characters than canon, but the same universe.
- Straight: "Alice and Bob" is a TV show of a genre that's kind of a hybrid of sci-fi and fantasy: people have teleporters and disintegrator guns, fairies exist, and cats can talk and have magical abilities. The show is about Alice and Bob and their magic cat Charles fighting against the evil fairies with the help of their technology combined with the magic of the good fairies in a jungle. However, the fanfiction entitled "Beyond Alice and Bob" is about a family of Original Character's: Diana, Edwin and their kids Fred and Greta and their own magical cat Helen who live in a neighbourhood that never makes an appearance on the actual show. There are also fairies but they're all OC's too.
- Exaggerated: "Beyond Alice and Bob" claims to be a fanfic of Alice and Bob but pays no resemblance to the show at all except for Helen's existence.
- Downplayed:
- Alice makes a brief appearance when she accidentally bumps into Diana on the street but other than that no canon characters are seen.
- Greta remarks that she saw a fairy on her way to school and gives a description to her father Edwin that matches the description of Illusion, who's a canon fairy, but whether or not that fairy is actually Illusion is given a Shrug of God by the fanfic writer.
- Fred remarks that he wants to be like Bob when he grows up, but Bob doesn't actually make an appearance.
- The neighbourhood that the family of Original Characters and the Original Character fairies live in is a canon location but was only onscreen for a few seconds.
- Justified:
- There is room in the universe for other unseen locations.
- The basic premise behind "Alice and Bob" can easily be replicated with different characters.
- Inverted: The fanfic features the canon characters, but transplants them to a setting which is far removed from canon.
- Subverted: The fanfic opens with the family of Original Characters and Helen the cat in the non-canon neighbourhood but then Alice, Bob and Charles show up.
- Double Subverted: It's just a brief cameo to remind you what it's based off of, and Alice, Bob, and Charles never show up again.
- Parodied: ???
- Zigzagged: "Beyond Alice and Bob" is a Series Fic. Sometimes it focuses only on the OC family and sometimes more on Alice, Bob and Charles. Sometimes equally. Additionally, the locations keep changing.
- Averted: The fanfic focuses on canon characters in a canon setting, or at least a setting which is consistent with canon. If any Original Characters appear, their role will be secondary to that of the canon characters.
- Enforced:
- The writer wanted to play around with the "Alice and Bob" universe but didn't want to include any canon characters without making them Out of Character and made a different location to try and explain why the canon characters weren't around.
- The creators of "Alice and Bob", while stopping short of a Fanwork Ban, have strict rules about what situations their characters may or may not be placed in. What's more, they have sent "cease and desist" letters to the owners of various fanfiction sites for failing to comply with these rules. As a result, sites which host "Alice and Bob" fics are forced to introduce rules stating that all fics featuring the canon characters must adhere to the creators' guidelines. The only way fans can get round these restrictions is to write about their own characters within the canon universe.
- Lampshaded: Helen remarks that "There's another cat named Charles and his owners Alice and Bob. They're so famous, so how come no-one else mentions them?"
- Invoked: Alice, Bob, and Charles are swiftly killed off to make room for different stories.
- Exploited: The creators of "Alice and Bob" decide to bring Helen onto the actual show.
- Defied: Alice, Bob, the canon fairies and Charles hang out at the same place as the Original Characters to avoid them taking over.
