Playing With / Designated Point Man

Go To

Basic Trope: The team member who goes first in dangerous situations.

  • Straight: Billy Finnigan, The Big Guy (despite being the shortest of the bunch), is always sent in for dangerous and foreign situations.
  • Exaggerated: Even within nuclear warfare, Billy is always sent for dangerous and foreign situations.
  • Downplayed: The role tends to rotate depending on who is best suited for the area. It's just that Billy's taken this role so much that people often expect him to lead first.
  • Justified: Billy's a tough cookie who has high survivability (meaning he can hold off until reinforcements arrive) and good fighting ability (meaning he can neutralize any threats before reinforcements arrive), thanks to his trusty M-60 Machine Gun.
  • Inverted: Billy is The Cavalry or other character archetypes that usually has him be part of reinforcements.
  • Subverted: Billy expects himself to be this; However, his whole team decides to take point at once.
  • Double Subverted: The mission ends in catastrophe due to moving in all at once even though they don't know the situation, and Billy is officially nominated as the point man.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: The need of a point man depends on the current situation; A quiet, possibly dangerous area? Point man. A chaotic battlefield with More Dakka flying everywhere? No point man.
  • Averted: There is no point man.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Billy, take point. You've been doing this for quite some time now, so you know what to do."
  • Invoked: The General decides that they need Billy to take point, because he has high survivability and good fighting ability.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: The scouts already brought intel on the situation; Billy's not needed to take point.
  • Discussed: The Squad discusses on who's going to take point this time.
  • Conversed: ???

Alright, troper, you're the Designated Point Man. Move in, and take point.
