Playing With / Brits Love Tea

Go To

Basic Trope: Brits love tea.

  • Straight: Bob and Alice are British, and always take a cup of tea with their breakfast.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob and Alice are always seen with a cup of tea in hand. They get upset if they're running out.
    • Bob and Alice never drink any other beverage but tea.
  • Downplayed:
    • The series is a British soap. Most characters are seen drinking tea from a mug or offering a cup to their guests without any fanfare.
    • Bob and Alice are Irish, but still love tea.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
    • Alice and Bob are members of the Church Of Latter-Day Saints and swear off hot beverages.
    • Everyone but the Brits love tea. The Brits detest it.
    • Violent Glaswegian / Brave Scot Clay hates tea. He prefers drinking a strong bottle of Scotch Whiskey as breakfast, even as a child.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob and Alice use a tea set on-screen... to brew coffee.
    • Bob and Alice are thought to be British because they like tea. They turn out to be American.
    • Alice likes tea not because she's British, but because she was raised in China.
  • Double Subverted:
    • But only because they've run out of tea.
    • While Bob and Alice are American, they are of British descent.
    • Alice then went on to study in the UK, which reinforced her love of tea.
  • Parodied:
    • Bob and Alice are in the middle of battling Emperor Evulz to the death when tea time arrives. All of them (being British) stop to have some tea and crumpets, and politely converse. Afterwards, they return to the fight.
    • British house taps have settings for cold water, hot water, and tea.
    • All British characters have the ability to magically conjure a teapot and cup at exactly 3 o'clock, so they can drop everything they're doing to have their afternoon tea at the established hour regardless of their geographical location.
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Among a cast of British characters, several of them enjoy tea, but several more detest it.
    • Whether or not Bob likes tea depends on the flavor or the brand.
  • Averted: No one drinks any hot drinks on camera.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "Does no one in Britain drink coffee?"
  • Invoked: Celia pretends to be British by drinking tea.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz uses the heroes' tea break to stage a surprise attack.
  • Defied: Alice and Bob, aware of the stereotype, ask for coffee.
  • Discussed:
    "Tea or coffee?"
"Ahem, we are British, you know."
  • Conversed: "Of course they're British, they drink tea!"
  • Deconstructed: Alice and Bob are living at the time of The British Empire, working for the British East India Company as it uses opium sales in China to fund tea purchasing.
  • Reconstructed: They get their tea via a company which supports an anachronistic version of Fairtrade.
  • Played For Laughs: Alice and Bob drink insane amounts of tea and go out of their way to find some if they lose access to it.
  • Played For Drama: The tea contains a specific combination of drugs to keep Alice and/or Bob functioning. When they lose it, everyone is in trouble.

Let's head back and 'ave a spot o' tea at the main trope, yeah, guv?
