Basic Trope: Things are given silly Latin-styled names.

  • Straight: "Here we have Bob (Robertus heroicus) and his loyal mate Alice (Alicius actionus fanserivae)".
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: "Here we have Bobus Smith."
  • Justified:
    • The setting's scientific community has a poorer grasp on Latin than the one in the real world.
    • It might sound like Latin, but it's actually a fictional language that's similar to Latin. In that language, the names are all completely accurate.
    • Binomium undecidious is only a stopgap name while the scientific community investigates where in the binomial tree the newly discovered species belongs.
  • Inverted: "Here we have a specimen of Felis catus, better known as the 'finger-biting bastard'."
  • Subverted:
    • Tigris sylicus (not sillycus as many pranksters claim) was named after its discoverer, Prof. J. Sylicus.
    • Robertus Heroicus is his official name, not his binomial name.note
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: "Here we have Bob (Homo sapiens). What, did you think we were gonna make up a stupid faux Latin name?"
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Only some species have Dog Latin names, while others have proper scientific names.
    • Sometimes characters and species have faux-scientific names, other times the actual taxonomic names are shown.
  • Averted:
    • Proper Latin names are given to the various species.
    • No Latin names are shown at all.
  • Enforced: The writers grew up on Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons. Or simply Rule of Funny.
  • Lampshaded: "Pretty sure you just made that Latin name up."
  • Invoked: At some point in the past the family gave itself a Latin sounding surname.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: "Here is Bob, or Troperus-" "No, no! Don't do that, he's a human being!" "Aw, you're no fun!"
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
