Set in a medieval time where death is around at every corner, you can expect plenty of gruesome things to happen.

  • That the Nameless Boy is the last of his tribe, alone and doomed to a slow death before Fushi even gets there. The fact that he dies quickly is merciful in comparison to the slow death he'd die alone if Fushi hadn't come upon him (as his Joaan was dead). Given how long it seemed between the 1st and 2nd episode where Fushi wanders aimlessly there was no likely human contact anywhere near close enough to matter.
  • Whenever the people who Fushi interacted with die and see their version of a perfect life, they look around in confusion and ask where Fushi is, only to realize that they are dead.
  • When the nameless boy realizes that his tribe had been essentially wiped out by the snowstorm and sees a sign that says "turn back", his cheery optimism finally fails him as he breaks down in the snow and begins to cry.
    • Fushi even tries to move the boy's body when the boy fell out of his chair, but didn't move.
      • The fact that the wolf corpse Fushi finds in the snow is actually Joaan, makes it more heartbreaking when the boy sees Fushi, believing his furry companion who was lost for so long had finally returned.
  • The boy sees his afterlife, which has Joaan, his village, and he happily asks if they had "fruit".
  • March's dream of growing up to become a mother is essentially dashed when she's chosen to become the annual sacrifice to the rampant Oniguma.
  • March trying to stop Parona from committing suicide as she holds March's lifeless body.
  • Gugu testing Fushi's other abilities and the two realizing that Fushi can conjure items he has touched or tasted before from his body. Gugu takes it a bit too far, cutting Fushi with a knife and burning him with a piece of firewood. While Fushi can heal quickly, Gugu scolds Fushi and tells him it's for his own good, Fushi at first looks surprised and close to crying.
  • Fushi suddenly shifting into Parona's form during his gladiator match. Immediately he's horrified at what her fate was.
  • After many adventures together, and after she promised Fushi she'll never be killed and leave him alone, Pyoran starts going senile, developing dementia, possibly Alzheimer-like symptoms until the once active old woman is a cranky, needy, depressed shell of her former self, with Fushi acting heartbroken and dismayed. Pyoran gets some moments of lucidity in which she begs the Beholder to let her die remembering a past in which she was healthy, strong and beautiful: while every other character dies "waking up" in his/her ideal world, slowly realizing his/her passing, Pyoran, fully aware to have passed on, gets to briefly enjoy an healthy body and mind and thanks the Man in Black before passing on. Fushi is so scarred that he continues to mourn Pyoran's fate for decades.
  • Kahaku's Sanity Slippage after a prolonged siege by the Nokkers take a tool on his mind until the point he starts indiscriminately kill Fushi over and over, due to his willpower fading enough for the Nokker to take control, just to make it all end. All with a serene smile in his face as he keeps mutilating the immortal being over and over...
  • Hayase stripping and trying to have her way with Fushi while the immortal is drugged and unable to resist.
  • The way that Fushi was about to kill Izumi's knocker (penetrating some vines into her body and then burning her from inside even feeling her pain at full length)... was spine-chilling, to say the least.
