The Feast of Three Arms contains examples of:

  • Badass Preacher: Prester John is a preacher with a criminal past that probably includes multiple murders.
  • Bastard Bastard: Jubal, “The Boy With No Last Name,” is also a murderer.
  • Call-Back:
    • The band that Jubal hears play 'Parmalene With Arms of Three' was sponsored by Harland and Harland's Mortuary Service (Motto: "We'll be the last people to let you down") which was mentioned on a previous concept album, 2011's Tales From the Emancipated Head
    • Prester John previously appeared in a song called 'Prester John in Appalachia' from the 2006 album Stab.
  • Concept Album: The whole album tells the story of Jubal’s Roaring Rampage of Revenge.
  • Disappeared Dad: Jubal’s father is never directly mentioned, but he clearly hasn’t been around for a long time.
  • Driven to Suicide: Parmalene stabs herself after her fiance leaves her at the altar.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Jubal is a murderer, and his whole motivation is his love for his Mama.
  • The Freakshow: Parmalene leaves Santa Fe to work in one of these. The lover who jilted her did so in favor of the show's Bearded Lady.
  • Girls with Moustaches: Parmalene’s fiance leaves her for the Bearded Lady, who reappears later as Prester John’s wife.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Jubal begins to feel remorse for his crimes, but changes his mind when his repentance leads to another revelation.
  • Missing Mom: First, Jubal’s mother leaves him behind to work in The Freakshow. Then she stops writing to him. He spends the next several years trying to find out what happened.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Jubal’s conscience eventually catches up with him…for a while.
  • Parental Love Song: “Bury Me,” about a son’s love for his (dead) mother.
  • Public Domain Character: Prester John shares a name with a legendary king of a fabulous Christian kingdom hidden in either Asia or Africa (Depending on when the legend was recounted and who you were asking).
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Jubal swears to kill the man who jilted his mother...and anyone else who gets in his way.
  • Russian Roulette: Every night, Jubal plays Russian Roulette with the moon; he says it helps him sleep. In “Rushee Roolet,” he makes Prester John join him.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: The crow, according to the narrator.
"The crow there in that cage, well, I wouldn't say he put them bad ideas into Jubal's head, but he sure sorta pushed him along, he did. Little nudges in the wrong direction. So like if the boy said "You think I should steal some apples offa that tree?" the crow would just say "Yeah, I'd do that". Or "You reckon I oughta let them hogs outta that pig-pen? Or cuss that School Ma'arm or other meaness?" the crow would just say "Yeah, I'd do that."
  • Villain Protagonist: Jubal commits multiple murders during the events of the album, and is said to have killed many more people before the main story begins.
