Ōi! Tonbo (Hey! Tonbo in English) is a 2014 golf manga written by Ken Kawasaki and illustrated by Yu Furusawa. It's published by Golf Digest with 49 volumes out as of 2024. An anime version by OLM was released on April 2024, directed by Oh Jin-Koo and the scripts written by Mitsutaka Hirota. While it airs in Japan through TV stations and streaming sites, it's available overseas via Amazon Prime.
Kazuyoshi Igarashi, after a certain incident in his pro golfer career, was forced to relocate to the Tokara Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, specifically to Hinojima (Hino Island). During his stay, he meets a young girl named Tonbo Oi, who lost her parents at a young age and was left a 3-iron golf club before and after she came to Hinojima. He sees that she's a natural in golf (thanks to a hidden golf course in Hinojima where she lives to play golf and practice her skills) and decides to train her to be a professional in her own right.
Ōi! Tonbo contains examples of:
- Food Porn: "Sashimi Shot" has Tonbo make all kinds of food with a fish head her grandfather got, ranging from sashimi to cooking the fish meat via nabe hotpot.
- Noodle Incident: The manga doesn' make it clear on what happened to Igarashi that he was forced to live in Hinojima away from the city.
- Scenery Porn: The manga (and anime) goes all the way to portray the scenery in Hinojima with the lush forests and serene seas.
- Shown Their Work: Igarashi is told that Hinojima doesn't have a lot of kids living in the island. And since the island has no high school, they need to move somewhere close by. This is a known problem for rural communities that don't have essential facilities (like schools) that they need to commute or live in the nearest town.
- Title Drop: "Sashimi Shot" refers to Tonbo's allegory of using thin slicing to make the golf ball go further.
