Karasugaoka Don't be Shy is a Yaoi manga by Yuukura Aki.
In the town of Karasugaoka, two gangs organize themselves to help the community and prevent crimes. On the East area, VOICE led by Sou Izuhara, and in the West area, Karasukai, led by Tetsuji Shinba. The two organizations have a noted rivalry, with their leaders having a terrible relationship with each other and getting into screaming matches whenever they meet. Secretly, however, Izuhara is in love with Shinba, and laments that, in a rush of shyness, he starts screaming at the target of his affection.
The manga was released in 2018, in the magazine Kachicomi. A sequel manga entitled Karasugaoka Don't be Shy 2nd started to be published in 2019.
Tropes
- Blind Without Them: Without his contacts, Izuhara is almost blind. He can't even tell that Shinba is right in front of him, and mistakes him for a random stranger.
- Crocodile Tears: Karen pretends to cry and that she was a victim of a group of delinquents she was actually leading in order to get close to the man who recorded her confession and destroys his phone.
- Entertainingly Wrong: Much of the comedy of the manga comes from the leads constantly misinterpreting each other's actions.
- When Shinba is walking around with a crossdressing Izuhara, he offers him his jacket because he's getting distracted by how attractive he looks, Izuhara assumes he's being given a jacket because his cross dress is so terrible Shinba can't even look at him.
- Shinba kisses Izuhara and pretends to be his boyfriend to dispel the idea that they assaulted a girl. Izuhara's nervousness leads him to throw up after the kiss, leading Shinba to assume Izuhara is just that disgusted by him.
- Establishing Character Moment:
- Both gangs get this one when they are shown saving a girl from being mugged, but immediately starting to fight with each other over their turfs.
- Sou Izuhara gets one separately when, right after that, he is shown with his face red and teary eyes, lamenting that he couldn't get along with Shinba.
- Forgotten First Meeting: Shinba doesn't remember the fact that he once saved Izuhara from a group of bullies, and that's what inspired the latter to create his own voluntary watchmen.
- Gayngster: Both groups in the manga are fashioned after gangs, and their leaders, both males, are in love with each other.
- Sequel Series: Instead of getting a second volume, the manga got a sequel in the form of Karasugaoka Don't be Shy 2nd, which takes place after the end of the first one, focusing on Izuhara and Shinba now dating.
- Stalker with a Crush: Izuhara is revealed to have one in the form of the police officer who often helps them. At one point, realizing Shinba is a threat, he kidnaps and drugs both of them in an attempt to show Izuhara is only his by assaulting him in front of Shinba.
- Tsundere: Izuhara is an incredibly sweet and kindhearted person, but because of his shyness, he is prone to act as if he hates the target of his affections. One chapter focuses on Shinba meeting him while the latter doesn't have his contacts, and not being able to recognize him, treats him extremely nice.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: After Shinba kisses Izuhara to dispel an attempt to accuse them of assaulting a girl, Izuhara turns around and starts puking from the stress of being kissed by his crush. The viewer sees mostly the reaction of the characters to it.
