Mad Scientists at their very best! note

Hakui no Ou-sama (King in a Labcoat) is a manga by Ayase Retsu scanlated by Träumerei Scans. It currently has 4 volumes.

In a certain town exists a laboratory named "King Lab." Living there are genius scientists with too much time and leisure on their hands, chiefly led by the eponymous Shiva King. One day the culprit of a series of murders arrives at the laboratory and a strange dark comedy begins.

This series shows examples of the following tropes:

  • Artificial Limbs: Shinobu's left arm was actually torn off in an accident before the events of the manga. It was replaced by an incredibly lifelike artificial arm Shiva made.
  • Berserk Button: Do not harm Shiva's 'subjects' when he's there. Also, don't remind him of Ceol.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Shiva's main priority is protecting and getting subjects. When he hears that the grandfather of the shopkeeper has died, he shares condoleances...because he wanted to get a hold of the man's body.
  • End-of-Series Awareness: In the final omake of the series that reflects on the series cancellation and a callback to the first omake, Shiva is shown packing up his belongings and tells shinobu that he is closing up shop due to “various circumstances” and is going on a journey for a while and will record them in his latest memoir and send it to him next time which Shinobu tries to tell Shiva that there won’t be a “next time”
  • Heroic R Ro D: Shiva almost suffers one when he locks himself and Trischka inside his lab for four days. When he gets out, the first thing he utters is 'Buona Notte' while it's actually morning.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Shinobu uses scalpels and Adam uses scissors which he eventually beats a humanoid with.
  • Mad Scientist: The group of characters we follow are each one, although Shiva fits the trope the most, as he also got the personality to go with this archetype.
  • Monster of the Week: The manga starts out with this format, although it is all part of an overaching plot.
  • Multinational Team: It's mostly hinted on, but all who live in King Lab (barring Trischka) are from a different country. In the first chapter, Shiva implies the countries they're from in a bit of a cryptic way. He calls the British Adam 'Black Tea Prince', the Japanese Shinobu 'Samurai' and the Egyptian Rajur 'Pyramid'. Shiva himself is from Italian origin.
  • Old Shame: In-Universe example. Shiva is Ceol, and the books he wrote were written when he was still a teen.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Trischka, good god. In the first chapter, she encounters a man who is currently on a murder spree in the drizzling rain. The first thing she says is: 'You're drenched!'
