After the funeral of Rui Tenhara's grandfather, Rui is pretty much considered to be an orphan, as she is the only child of the Tenhara family. Her father is currently overseas, while her mother died before the events of the story.

However, a day passed since her grandfather's funeral, things radically changed for Rui, when her father overseas married someone. It turns out that Rui's father marries the mother of Chiharu Koda, an average office lady, thereby making Chiharu the older stepsister of Rui.

A Fine and Bright Day (Harebare Biyori) is a slice-of-life manga written and illustrated by Yoshi Yoshimura, which began serialization in Comic Cune on August 27, 2020.

This manga provides examples of:

  • Break the Haughty: Despite the overall light-hearted theme of the manga, the death of Rui's grandfather affected her mostly in the first chapter of the story, as he was the only person in her family who looked after her. That is subverted in later chapters, as she moves on with it.
  • Cool Big Sis: Despite being a stepsister, Chiharu is shown to have fondness towards Rui.
  • Foil:
    • Rui and Chiharu:
      • Rui is much younger than Chiharu, physically. Emphasized in some parts of the manga that Rui clearly has a slightly larger age gap and height towards Chiharu.
      • Personality-wise, Rui is more mature and much calmer than Chiharu, and the former has no qualms in bluntly pointing out the latter's horrible cooking. Chiharu, on the other hand, is extremely doting and sometimes boisterous towards her younger stepsister.
    • Rui and Kurumi:
      • Rui cares less for competitiveness, while Kurumi is often sensitive and childish about losing.
      • Much like Chiharu, Rui's rather calm and rational personality is the opposite to Kurumi's outgoing personality.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo: Inverted. The purple-haired Chiharu is shown to be rather doting and energetic, while the white-haired Rui is shown to be rational and calm.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: Rui. Despite being an orphan after her grandfather's passing, she later gains a happy family via her older stepsister Chiharu.
  • Practically Different Generations: Chiharu is an office lady, who is at least in her 20s, while Rui is a child-aged girl.
  • Schoolgirl Series
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Kirika and Kurumi are often not in good terms within each other, since it was revealed that Kurumi hit Kirika in the past, leading to the former getting scolded by their teacher.
  • Slice of Life: The manga focuses on the relationship between Rui and Chiharu as stepsisters.
