Timbuctoo is a book series about Funny Animals by Roger Hargreaves (yes, that Roger Hargreaves).

The animals are named after the sound they make.

There was also an Animated Adaptation by Cosgrove Hall which was narrated by the late Ronnie Corbett and aired on CITV.

Tropes

  • Adaptation Dye-Job:
    • In the original books, Moo is tan. On the TV series, however, she's white with brown blotches.
    • Honk is likewise black on the original book, but purple on the TV series.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Neigh the horse is red, Honk the seal is purple in the TV series and Grizzle the bear is magenta.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Moo is not fond of porridge, which is the only thing she can eat until she tries grass for the first time after trying other varieties of food and not liking them either.
  • Funny Animal: Half of the population of Timbuctoo consists of Living Polyhedron-shaped animals who can stand up on two legs and talk.
  • Forgetful Jones: Woof. His own story involves him forgetting how to bark and instead ends up making different animal noises to scare birds until he meets another dog who tells him that dogs should woof, which ends up going wrong because the other dog calls him a silly billy and in the end, instead of barking at the bird, he shouts "You silly billy!" at a bird.
  • The Klutz: Bleat.
  • The Owl-Knowing One: Subverted with Hoot. He thinks he's intelligent because he's an owl, but pretty much makes up answers to questions on the fly, which Squawk eventually exposes, and doesn't know the spelling of the word "Tuesday". Played straight on the other books/episodes he appears in, though.
  • Stubborn Mule: Bray, in both a literal and figurative sense.
  • World of Funny Animals: Downplayed. While Funny Animals take up a majority of Timbuctoo's population, Living Polyhedrons which are similar to the Mr. Men also live there. The TV series removes the latter, however, playing this straight.
