A novel by Ira Tabankin.

2016, as President Obama celebrates victory in the war on terror and the success of his diplomatic and welfare efforts, Iran nukes the United States, destroying New York and Washington DC, effectively decapitating the government. The Acting President makes everything much, much worse by inadvertently inviting Russian troops for aid.

Jay Tabekin, a 63-year-old survival prepper in poor health (bad disc in his back, COPD from a lifetime of smoking) living forty miles from the DC area must walk 37 miles across potentially radioactive, anarchic wasteland to rescue his wife, who works at a lab a mile from Dulles International Airport.

37 Miles contains examples of:

  • Hobbes Was Right: It takes the average person maybe an hour after the failure of electronics to start fighting over food.
  • The Quest: To rescue Patty, at any cost.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: The police Jay meets near the beginning are cautious, but willing to help insofar as it doesn't detract from their ability to deal with every other crisis.
  • Take That!: Despite appearing only briefly at the beginning, the Obama Administration and Barack Obama in particular are once again displayed as utterly incompetent.
