Makia O'Drielle is the daughter of the noble O'Drielle family, who are the descendants of the infamous Scarlet Witch, who is known in the world of Maydare to be the "world's worst witch." On her tenth birthday, she saves a young boy from slavery after witnessing his incredible magical abilities and names him Thor. He is taken into the family as an apprentice and as Makia's knight, and the two of them become close friends.

However, everything changes one night when Thor is chosen as one of the Guardians of the Savior, a person from another world who is destined to save Maydare. At the same time, Makia regains the memories of her past life as a high school girl from modern-day Japan. The two are split apart, but Makia is determined to reunite with him again and tell him her true feelings, and does so by enrolling into Lune Ruschia Magic School, the most prestigious magic school in the world.

Tales of Reincarnation in Maydare (Maydare Tensei Monogatari) is a light novel series written by Midori Yuma (author of Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits) and illustrated by Esora Amaichi, which began publication in 2019. The series is actually a remake of an earlier series where much of the same concepts carried over. A manga adaptation drawn by Nana Natsunishi began serialization in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy magazine in 2020.

This series provides examples of:

  • Archetypal Character: Downplayed, but a lot of the characters bear traits resembling typical Otome-game-characters note :
    • Beatrice closely resembles the typical Otome-Villainess: A highborn Alpha Bitch who plays the role of Disposable Fiancé to Gilbert's Prince Charming.
    • Maika herself is a smitted Childhood Friend of a Love Interest who hampers the main character's efforts in pursuing a romance with Thor, making her effectively the rival/villainess of the "Thor-route".
    • Nero is a Penny Among Diamonds who got into the Wizarding School based on his immense magical talent, making him a Gender Flipped Otome-Heroine in this aspect.
    • Frey is a classic case of The Casanova whose behavior stems from a troubled childhood, in his case being actually a prince who was thrown out of the royal palace after his mother caused a scandal.
    • Prince Gilbert whould normally be the classic Prince Charming-character, who dumps his Alpha Bitch-fiance for the heroine, although he isn't the Crown Prince as is often typical.
    • Other Capture-Targets would probably include Prince Ulysses and Sir Lionel.
  • Adapted Out: So far, the manga hasn't shown Kazuha's stifling home life or the specifics of her friendship with Airi, giving Airi a little bit of an Adaptational Jerkass since the manga makes her seem like a fake friend to Kazuha, which wasn't really the case.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Kazuha couldn't confess her feelings for Saitou, which becomes her dying regret.
  • The Chosen Many: The world of Maydere has a prophecy about The Savior, who will be accompanied by four Guardians, who are recognised by a Distinguishing Mark.
  • Dramatic Irony: Airi blames herself for the death of Tooru and the disappearance of her best (and only) friend Kazuha, as trying to come between them inadvertently set the stage for those events. She ends up in Maydare after wishing for her happiness upon realizing she'd lost the only people who truly cared about her. Except she unknowingly repeats the same mistakes in Maydare with the exact same people, once again trying to keep Thor for herself and treating Makia as a villain getting in the way of their romance.
  • Hands-Off Parenting: Makia's parents are noted to have a laidback style of parenting, but even they have their limits, such as the period of time where Makia became absorbed into study for entrance exams after Thor was taken away to the capital.
  • Happily Married: Maika's parents are clearly in love with each other, becoming sickening once they appear together.
  • Incapable of Disobeying: It turns out that Guardian marks gain this ability over time, forcing the bearer to instinctually value the Savior above all else, regardless of whatever other action they might want to take at that moment. The original fourth Guardian, Eugene Batiste refused to reveal themselves because of this, not wanting to abandon his ill fiancée.
  • Internal Reveal: Airi learns at the end of Volume 2 that the supposedly shrewd villainess Makia and her missing best friend Kazuha are one-and-the-same, after the later chews her out for treating the world as if it's exact the same as the story she wrote. Airi remains in denial of it until halfway through Volume 3, however.
  • I Will Find You: The plot is kicked off with Makia determined to reunite with Thor after he is taken away.
  • Past-Life Memories: Makia regains her past life memories during a meteor shower; though she had dreams about them before, she didn't know what they meant until then. Receiving these memories have no affect on her personality. On the flipside, when she starts regaining the memories of her ancestor, the Scarlet Witch, she briefly developed their vindictive personality, and she notes on a few occasions that she still has an urge to act on those feelings during stressful situations.. At the end of Volume 3, Makia learns that reincarnation is a normal and known quantity in this universe, and while actually remembering any of one's past lives isn't exactly common, it isn't unheard of.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: This was averted for Makia and Thor due to Thor being chosen as a Guardian.
  • "Reborn as Villainess" Story: It is very often cited as such a story, albeit with the twist that a) the story is a book and not an Otome Game and b) Makia would only be the villainess in one route (the "Thor-route") of the game, with Beatrice being the more typical Otome-villainess.
  • Reincarnate in Another World:
    • Makia's past life is Kazuha Oda, a regular Japanese high school girl who got reincarnated into the world of Maydare after being murdered by a mysterious man.
    • While Thor is quickly shown to be a reincarnation of Tooru Saitou, Kazuha's childhood friend and crush, he doesn't have his memories at all. Makia chooses not to tell him this.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: People who are blessed by the spirits each receive a drawback. Those blessed by fire spirits, for example, are hated by water spirits, who will attempt to drown them to death if they fall into a large enough body of water. People who are blessed by all types of spirits have no physical drawbacks, but in a way, their drawback is the worst of them all in that the blessing makes them mentally frail and prone to insanity.
  • Wizarding School: This is what Lune Ruschia Magic School is.
