Double Standards is a non-fiction story written by gelefant.

It is about Jermaine's frequently complicated relationship to/with girls and women.

Artwork for the story can be found here, here, here, here, and here.

Tropes:

  • Absurd Phobia: After messing things up between him and Jessica, Jermaine feared that she and the other cheerleaders would beat him up as payback for what he did. This never happened, and he was told multiple times that it wouldn't. He got over his "fear" near the end of tenth grade.
  • All Guys Want Cheerleaders: In the chapter of the same name, Jermaine had big crushes on his cheerleader friends Jessica and Sarah.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: All of Jermaine's crushes were just that, crushes. As a consequence, he's never been on a date or in a romantic relationship.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: This was usually the main, if not the only, reason for at least a few of Jermaine's crushes.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Ayla and both Marissas are Big Beautiful Women who wear glasses full-time. Nicole, Chelsea (who's also a Big Beautiful Woman), and Camille occasionally wear glasses and are just as beautiful as the other girls.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Chelsea, Ayla, and both Marissas are Bespectacled Cuties who are on the bigger side.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: It's even the title of a chapter! Jermaine tended to either wait a long time to tell his crushes how he felt or never told them at all.
  • Did Not Get the Girl: It's even the title of a chapter! As mentioned above, Jermaine never ended up with any of the girls who he crushed on.
  • Everyone Can See It: Jermaine tended to (unintentionally) make his crushes obvious, to the point where most of the people in his life could tell when he had a crush.
  • First Love: Nicole was this for Jermaine.
  • Girls Have Cooties: In the chapter of the same name, Jermaine began to "hate" girls in second grade for apparently no reason. He had this attitude through seventh grade.
  • Glasses Are Sexy: Just like in his previous story Glasses Stories, some of the people in Jermaine's life think (or used to think) that he finds glasses attractive.
  • Has a Type: Also as mentioned in Glasses Stories, Jermaine has been told that he has a type- white girls with glasses.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: This was the main reason that Jermaine didn't want to tell Marissa or Ayla how he really felt about them.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Lauren has blue eyes and is described as having a child-like innocence about her.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: When Jermaine asked Morgan out in "Didn't Get the Girl," she said that she already had a boyfriend. Jermaine told her that as long as she's happy, he's happy.
  • Just Friends: This is ultimately how Jermaine's crushes ended, with said crush only wanting to be/stay friends with him.
  • Men Are Better Than Women: Jermaine believed this from second through seventh grade.
  • Perverse Sexual Lust: "Fictional Attraction" is all about the cartoon crushes Jermaine had/has. They are as follows:
  • Pubescent Braces:
    • Nicole had braces in sixth and seventh grade, although it's reasonable to assume she wore braces before middle school.
    • Morgan still had braces during her senior year of high school.
  • Shout-Out: Has its own page here.
  • Stalker with a Crush:
    • During fourth grade, Jermaine sometimes followed Jenny around during recess. He admits that he may have had a crush on her and just tried to hide it by acting like he "hated" her.
    • During ninth grade, he almost constantly followed Jessica around and messaged her on Facebook. She eventually got fed up with this and told him to stop following and messaging her.
  • Take Over the World: As part of Jermaine's Girls Have Cooties and Men Are Better Than Women mindset mentioned above, he thought that girls would one day take over the world.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: "Valentine's Day Vitriol" is about Jermaine's most memorable Valentine's Days.
  • Valentine's Day Vitriol: In the above-mentioned chapter of the same name, Jermaine has a kind of love-hate relationship to/with Valentine's Day because (as mentioned above) he's never been on a date or had a girlfriend. However, he also admits that he's had more good Valentine's Days than bad.
  • Where da White Women At?: "Mix and Swirl (a.k.a. Salt and Pepper)" is about how many of the people in Jermaine's life have thought that he had a preference for white girls/women since several of his crushes were white.
