Devil House is a novel by John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats fame. Devil House follows true crime writer Gage Chandler as he begins to wrestle with the ethics of his line of work while writing his next novel.
This book provides examples of:
- Ambiguous Disorder: Seth and Alex are both all but stated to have some sort of disorder. Most likely ADHD and schizophrenia, respectively.
- Burial at Sea: How Diana Crane/the “White Witch” tries to dispose of the bodies.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The Devil House murders.
- Satanic Panic: The double-homicide at the titular Devil House took place during the Satanic Panic.
- Trashy True Crime: Gage criticizes other true crime writers for being this, and eventually begins questioning if that’s what he is too.
