The Owl House

Irony in this series.
  • For a Disney Channel show, The Owl House -without ever actually talking about it directly- presents a surprisingly scathing critique of organized religion, along with religious fundamentalism, and especially religious extremism. Simultaneously, the show still ends up using many of the tropes from the New Testament, specifically those relating to The Messiah and The Antichrist, completely straight, albeit with a suitably weird, gothic, and grotesque twist to them.
  • Amity supposedly ended her friendship with Willow when they were children because her magic was weak. Luz can't help but notice the irony in this, since Willow is one of the strongest witches she knows.
  • After Luz finds out that Amity is afraid of being rejected by someone she wanted to ask to the school dance, she comforts her by offering to be her date instead. Unbeknownst to Luz, she was the one that Amity wanted to ask out in the first place.
  • Luz is friendly, energetic, and outgoing, yet utterly failed to find friends in the human world. Vee is a shy, reserved, easily frightened basilisk disguised as a human, yet she easily befriended a group of human teenagers while at camp.
  • Alador and Odalia are Abusive Parents who are apathetic at best towards Luz, yet they allowed her and Amity's relationship to develop uninterrupted despite Oldalia doing so reluctantly (and also because they're too busy licking the Emperor's boots to look into it). Camila is a Good Parent who would almost certainly like Amity if she knew about her (and indeed does like her when they do meet), yet she ends up becoming a major threat to their romance completely unintentionally.
  • Nearly all of the Coven heads have some irony to them. One has to wonder if Belos is assigning them on purpose.
    • Raine Whispers, head of the Bard coven, suffers from such crippling stage fright that they run off the stage screaming during their own inauguration.
    • Darius Deamonne, head of the Abomination Coven, is a Neat Freak Dandy who endlessly complains about his clothes getting dirty in his first appearance. Also, while Abomination witches specialize in making mindless servants out of goop, Darius can't stand Hunter's blind obedience, and only starts warming up to him when Hunter explicitly disobeys direct orders to protect his new friends.
    • Terra Snapdragon, head of the Plant Coven, is a complete sociopath whose idea of fun is watching kids battle to the death, and who sees no problems with drugging Raine to keep them in line.
    • Eberwolf, head of the Beastkeeping Coven, while fully intelligent, behaves like a beast would, walking on all fours and speaking exclusively in growls and whines (though Darius can understand them).
    • Adrian Graye, head of the Illusion Coven, shoves all of his work onto his underlings and communicates almost entirely in Buffy Speak, giving the illusion of competence.
