Historical Domain Character / it feels more like a memory

Go To

Historical Domain Characters are part of the territory when writing fanfiction of Hamilton, whose named characters were all people who existed in real life. Almost the entire cast of it feels more like a memory is a Historical Domain Character: everyone on the Characters page is one, sans some of the Burr kids who are instead Fan-Created Offspring, and the minor and throwaway background characters are also usually Historical Domain Characters. Unless otherwise noted, the characters listed on this page didn't make it to the musical, so some of them can also be found under Adapted Out. Aside from characters contained in the Characters page folder, characters are listed in order of their first appearance or mention in the fic, whichever comes first.

    Characters page
Organized to appear in the same order as the Characters page. Unless otherwise specified, everyone here shows up in the Hamilton musical in some form, except maybe all of the Hamilton childrennote .
  • John Adams is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure. He’s the second president and one of the “Founding Fathers” of the United States of America.
  • Joan of Arc is a real human being who lived and died. She’s known for religious conviction leading her to lead French troops in battles against the English in The Hundred Years War. In-Universe, she’s a historical figure who’s also known for being a Seer. Not in the Hamilton musical.
  • Aaron Burr is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure.
  • Theodosia Bartow Prevost, later Theodosia Bartow Burr, is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution.
  • Theodosia Burr, later Theodosia Burr Alston, is a real human being who lived in the time period portrayed in this fanfiction. The male second-lifetime Burr kids (Philip, Alexander, Aaron Jr., and John) are genetically the same people as the Hamilton children, so you might count them as Historical Domain Characters. Whether they characters appear in the musical or not depends on your take on if you counted them as the same people as the Hamilton children, on how many of the real-life Hamilton children actually made it to the musical, and if not all of them which ones.
  • Angelica Schuyler, later Angelica Schuyler Church, is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution.
  • Benjamin Franklin is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure (one of the "Founding Fathers" of the United States of America).
  • Alexander Hamilton is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure (one of the "Founding Fathers" of the United States of America).
  • The Hamilton children in this fic (Philip, Angelica, Alexander Jr., James Alexander, John, William, Elizabeth, and another Philip) are real human beings who lived in the time period portrayed in this fanfiction. Angelica Hamilton and the firstborn Philip Hamilton are certainly in the musical (Philip raps "I have a sister" at the age of 9, she's the only of his historical sisters that would be alive at this point), and at least one other Hamilton child is. It's possible all of them are, if only by very indirect mention (Alexander sings about taking "the children to the church on Sunday" after Philip dies. Angelica already exists, making one child, so at the minimum one other Hamilton child must exist to allow Alexander to say "children," plural, at the maximum all of them can exist). Looking for an Elizabeth Hamilton will probably result in Alexander's wife instead of his daughter; in real life his youngest daughter's full given name was Eliza, not Elizabeth like in the fic.
  • Thomas Jefferson is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure. He’s the third president and one of the “Founding Fathers” of the United States of America, and wrote the Declaration of Independence.
  • The Marquis de Lafayette is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure.
  • John Laurens is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution.
  • Dolley Payne Todd Madison is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure. She shaped the role of First Lady, though the role wouldn’t be known by that name for a long while.
  • James Madison is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure. He’s the fourth president and one of the “Founding Fathers” of the United States of America, and wrote the Bill of Rights (first 10 amendments to the Constitution).
  • Hercules Mulligan is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution.
  • Maria Reynolds is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution.
  • Elizabeth Schuyler, later Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton (Elizabeth Schuyler Burr in the second lifetime), is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution. Although her real self never got married to Aaron Burr and thus never became Elizabeth Schuyler Burr.
  • Margarita "Peggy" Schuyler, later Margarita Schuyler Van Rensselaer in real life, is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution.
  • George Washington is a real human being who was alive at the time of the American Revolution and is now a known historical figure. He’s the first president and one of the “Founding Fathers” of the United States of America, and led the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War where America fought for independence.
    First lifetime
  • Aaron's preacher grandfather Jonathan Edwards. Made it to the musical in one mention when Aaron sings "my grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher," gets a bigger role in this fic for teaching Aaron Seers do not have the luxury to lie, which informs many of his decisions, and for raising Aaron until he dies when Aaron is 8. (Historically, he died when Aaron is 2.)
  • Samuel Fraunces and his Queen's Head tavern. The tavern was a meeting place for many Revolutionary events and for the Sons of Liberty, which Hamilton and Hercules Mulligan were a part of. Neither the man nor the place are mentioned in the musical, but both show up in the fic when Aaron buys Alexander a drink in the first lifetime. Aaron's implied to be a semi-regular there, and the place gets offhand mentions in all the complete lifetimes.
  • Henry Laurens, John Laurens’ dad and 5th president of the Continental Congress. Not in the musical, mentioned offhandedly several times in the fic in relation to John. Might qualify for background status, given we see how the pressure he puts on John affects John in one chapter.
  • General Richard Montgomery, who Aaron says died in Quebec in the Hamilton musical. Makes an appearance here to die just like he does in the musical. What the musical and fic don’t tell you is that he took over the invasion of Canada during the Revolutionary War from Philip Schuyler.
  • Benedict Arnold, extremely well-known in real life for switching from fighting for the American Revolution to fighting for the British. Not in the musical, but gets an offhand mention about his colonel self being General Montgomery’s replacement if he dies in Aaron’s first life. Also might qualify for background status, given how Aaron and Washington debate what to do with him in one chapter since he hasn't done anything wrong yet in the second lifetime.
  • Colonel William Malcolm and his Additional Continental Regiment. Aaron Burr led this regiment in real life, and it and the colonel get offhand mentions in the fic.
  • Charles Cornwallis, a leading British general, gets namedropped in the fic but isn’t in the musical.
  • Evan Edwards, Charles Lee's second in his duel with John Laurens in the fic and in reality. An offhand mention.
  • The British officer Theodosia was married to before she married Aaron. He's not ever mentioned by name in the fic or musical, only offhandedly by his role as Theodosia's British officer husband, but that information is enough to identify him as Jacques Marcus Prevost.
  • Alexander's mother, Rachel Faucette. An offhand mention in both fic and musical, but her death impacts Alexander's view of the world and political mudslinging bashing her makes Alexander break down in one chapter, so might qualify for background status.
  • Alexander's cousin who committed suicide, an offhand mention in both musical and fic which don't name him but both give enough information to identify him as Peter Lytton.
  • John the Baptist, famous for his role in The Bible, and regardless of one's religious beliefs he was a Jewish preacher who lived and died. In this fic, an offhand mention says he's accepted as one of the great seers of the past.
  • John Jay, mentioned in the musical with "John Jay got sick after writing five [of the Federalist Papers defending the Constitution]." Does the same in the fic and also plays his historical role in mentions identifying him as head of the Manumission Society, someone who helped Alexander Hamilton get to lead the New York Provincial Company of Artillery, and helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris.
  • Mary Wollstonecraft, one of the founding feminist philosophers. Gets offhand namedrops in all complete lifetimes in the fic. Aaron read her work, quotes her when writing a pamphlet on equality, and hung her portrait to give his daughter Theodosia a role model.
  • Philip Schuyler, father of the Schuyler Sisters, Alexander Hamilton's father-in-law, and a Senator of New York in the musical and fic. In the second lifetime, he's Aaron Burr's father-in-law instead. About the same level of importance as in the musical.
  • George Clinton, governor of New York, a rival of Hamilton and the Schuyler family, and the Vice President after Aaron Burr in real life. (In the fic, he's definitely not Vice President after Aaron in the first or second life, it's left ambiguous in the third.) Mentioned once as asking Aaron to be New York State Attorney General.
  • When Aaron sees an army burning everything in its path in his Civil War dream, that's William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea. That vision may or may not have included Sherman himself, it's not specified. What is specified is one politician beating another with a cane on the floor of the Senate, which would be Preston Brooks and Charles Sumner respectively; and a man Aaron knows is the President getting shot in the back of the head, which would be Abraham Lincoln.
  • Madame de Senat did set up a school for young ladies in New York City with Aaron and Theodosia Bartow Burr, which doesn't make it to the musical at all. Very downplayed since she’s mentioned offhandedly.
  • The recurring offhand mention of Mrs. Payne of "Mrs. Payne's boarding house in Philadelphia" is confirmed to be Dolley Madison's mother Mary Paynenote  in the third lifetime in chapter 31.
  • James Monroe, 5th President of the United States, the person who originally investigated Alexander Hamilton for financial crimes which led up to the Reynolds Affair, confronted him about these possible crimes, and sent letters Alexander used to prove his innocence to Thomas Jefferson, and got talked out of dueling Alexander over this issue by Aaron Burr.
  • George Eacker, who makes it to the musical and killed Philip Hamilton in a duel. He shows up to do the same in this fic.
  • Justice Samuel Chase, offhandedly mentioned as someone who Jefferson tried to impeach and whose trial Aaron presides over, both in the fic and in reality.
  • Dr. Charles D. Cooper, who played a role in Alexander and Aaron's fight in the lead-up to the duel. In history and the fic, Cooper writes of mean things Alexander said, and that he could include a "still more despicable" thing Alexander thinks about Aaron but doesn't actually do it. This letter gets published. His letter plays a big role in their disagreement, most notably Aaron wanting to know what this "still more despicable" thing is. Mentioned several times as Alexander and Aaron send letters leading up to their duel.
  • William P. Van Ness, Aaron Burr's second in his duel with Alexander Hamilton. About as significant as he was in the musical; an offhand mention, though he gets a very slight role expansion in that he helps point out the exact clause in a letter that Aaron gets upset with Alexander over, which wasn't in the musical.
  • Judge Kent presumably existed, as he's mentioned in Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton's real and fic letters exchanged before they duel as a person who, along with Alexander, said that Aaron is dangerous and shouldn't be trusted with government, according to Dr. Cooper's letter. A very offhand mention confined to the letters.
  • Nathaniel Pendleton, Alexander Hamilton's second in his duel with Aaron Burr. As significant as he was in the musical; an offhand mention, though he gets a very slight role expansion in that he brings Aaron a note from the dying Alexander, and alerts Aaron about Alexander's duel and takes on pro-bono law cases to help Aaron help others in the second lifetime.
  • Dr. David Hosack, the doctor Alexander Hamilton brought to the duel with Aaron Burr. About as significant as he was in the musical, though he gets a very slight role expansion in that he also treats Philip Burr in Aaron's second lifetime as well as Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison in the third lifetime.
  • John Church, Angelica Schuyler Church's husband. The "wealthy husband" Angelica found in the musical, a recurring offhand mention, and provided the guns for Aaron and Alexander's duel which wasn't mentioned in the musical but happened in reality.
  • Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, is mentioned twice in the fic, once in the first lifetime as writing letters to Aaron and being willing to fight a war over land in the west Aaron leases from the Spanish government, and once in the third lifetime when Aaron namedrops him when talking about abuse of power.
  • General James Wilkinson, who held the post of Senior Officer of the United States Army after Alexander Hamilton, and more relevantly to the fic, played a role in Aaron Burr’s treason trial in the first lifetime. An offhand mention.
  • Samuel Swartwout and Matthew Davis, who helped Aaron return from Europe to New York in his first lifetime. Mentioned offhandedly.
  • Theodosia’s son. He's not ever mentioned by name in the fic or, only offhandedly by his role as Theodosia's son who dies before she does, but that information is enough to identify him as Aaron Burr Alston.
  • Eliza Jumel, a wealthy widow Aaron married at age 77, shows up in Aaron's first lifetime. And offhand mention.
  • Reverend Van Pelt visited Aaron Burr frequently before he died. He shows up as Aaron's about to die in his first lifetime, as a friend and clergyman. An offhand mention.
    Second lifetime
  • Aaron's father and mother, recurring offhand mentions who die at the start of every lifetime after the first one. They make it to the musical in a single mention when Aaron sings "my mother was a genius, my father commanded respect."
  • Aaron's grandmother, also a recurring offhand mention who dies at the start of every lifetime after the first one.
  • Sally, Aaron Burr's older sister. A recurring offhand mention at the start of every lifetime after the first one, and a few times later in his various lifetimes.
  • The Shippen family that is mentioned offhandedly to have taken in Aaron and his sister at the start of every lifetime starting from this lifetime going forward.note
  • Aaron's maternal uncle Timothy Edwards, who is mentioned offhandedly in this lifetime and the third one to have gotten custody of him and his sister after the Shippens took them in.
  • Aaron's aunt Rhoda Ogden, and Timothy Edwards' wife. A single offhand mention.
  • His brother-in-law, later identified as Tapping Reeve in-story, who gets a few offhand mentions and who Aaron moves in with after he graduates from Princeton.
  • Alexander McDougall, who gets a single offhand mention as having helped Alexander get to lead the New York Provincial Company of Artillery.
  • General Nathanael Greene, known for his success leading the Continental Army in the south. Gets a few mentions and appearances in his role as one of Washington's generals and is part of the war council Washington calls in the fic.
  • Henry Knox, one of Washington's generals and the person Fort Knox was named after. Gets a few mentions as one of Washington's generals in the fic.
  • Baron von Steuben, who trained the Continental Army to great effect and friend of Alexander Hamilton.
  • Samuel Seabury, who sings "Farmer Refuted", titled for Alexander Hamilton's actual pamphlet The Farmer Refuted rebutting Seabury's arguments, in the musical. Alexander's pamphlet refuting Seabury shows up in the first lifetime though Seabury doesn't show up himself. He gets an offhand mention here.
  • General James Ewing, who didn’t cross the Delaware River because of the ice, and is part of the war council Washington calls in the fic, appears and gets mentioned in the second lifetime offhandedly. He’s completely confined to chapter 8. He was also a Pennsylvania politician in real life.
  • General John Cadwalader, who crossed the Delaware River, found he couldn’t cross his artillery over and crossed back, and is part of the war council Washington calls in the fic, appears and gets mentioned offhandedly in the second lifetime. Like Ewing, he’s confined to chapter 8.
  • General John Sullivan, mentioned and appears a few times in his role as Washington’s general and is part of the war council Washington calls in the fic. Like Ewing and Cadwalader, confined to chapter 8 and is an offhand mention/appearance.
  • Captain John Mott, involved in the crossing of the Delaware in both the fic and real life. Confined to chapter 8.
  • Joseph Reed, one of Washington’s aides-de-camp and a delegate to the Continental Congress. Mentioned offhandedly as an aide-de-camp in chapter 8, and as a Continental Congress delegate in Aaron’s second lifetime.
  • General Hugh Mercer, the same General Mercer mentioned in the musical who died and got a street named after him according to Aaron and Alexander in “The Room Where It Happens.” Which is actually true. One of the generals in the war council Washington calls in the fic. Confined to chapter 8, but still gets that street named after him (and “Mercer street” gets mentioned in chapter 3).
  • Adrienne de La Fayette, the Marquis de Lafayette’s wife. Mentioned a few times from here on out in connection to Lafayette.
  • Chrétien de Troyes, a French poet who wrote of Lancelot and is mentioned posthumously in Aaron and Lafayette's debate about whether Lancelot is French or English.
  • King George III, king of Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War. Made it to the Hamilton musical, and makes it to the fic too.
  • Marie-Antoinette shows up briefly during the Treaty of Paris negotiations and this is the queen the Marquis de Lafayette says danced with him and he stepped on her foot in the fourth lifetime. A few offhand mentions/appearances.
  • Napoléon Bonaparte, namedropped twice (thrice if you count "Napoleon, the Napoleonic Wars" as two separate namedrops) as what's coming in the future for other countries.
  • Georges Washington de Lafayette, son of the Marquis de Lafayette who was sent to America and became a houseguest of his namesake George Washington. Shows up in this fic briefly and befriends Alex Burr.
  • Paul Cuffe, founder of the first racially integrated school in the United States, heavily involved with attempts to improve a colony of free blacks in Sierra Leone, and owner of a lucrative shipping business, is a real person who didn’t make it to the musical but appears in the second timeline in the fic.
  • Cato, Hercules Mulligan's slave who helped him spy on the British. He's never mentioned in the musical, but makes an appearance in the fic in Aaron's second lifetime.
  • Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man in order to fight in the Revolutionary War in real life. Not in the musical, but makes it into the fic in Aaron's second lifetime. She gets lots of divergence from her real life counterpart: Aaron handles her case for pay for her military service, she runs an inn, and according to Word of God in the author’s notes of chapter 21 she didn't marry her real-life husband.
  • Maria Reynolds' daughter, Susan, isn't mentioned in the musical but is mentioned in Aaron's second lifetime and appears in the chapter addressing the aftermath of Aaron's third death.
    Third lifetime
  • Philip Freneau, "Poet of the American Revolution" and political ally of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Not in the musical, but is in the fic in Aaron's third lifetime as Madison's roommate at Princeton, like he was in real life.
  • John Witherspoon, president of Princeton College. Real-life Alexander met with him to talk about a potential accelerated course of study at Princeton without punching anyone. He shows up in the fic in the third lifetime, running the college during the time Aaron and Madison attend and letting Madison study Hebrew and political philosophy under him like in reality. And unlike reality, he mentions Alexander's bursar-punching incident in a letter to him.
  • William Temple Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's grandson and secretary, and eventually the American delegation's secretary during the Treaty of Paris. He's not in the musical but shows up to ask Aaron lots of questions in his third lifetime.
  • Martha Jefferson, happily married to Thomas Jefferson, died after complications following childbirth. Offhandedly, posthumously mentioned, and not by name, but the information given in-story is enough to identify her as Martha Jefferson.
  • Lucy Elizabeth Jefferson, the last child of Martha and Thomas Jefferson. She’s not mentioned by name, but it is mentioned that a child of Thomas Jefferson died two years after they were born, and was Martha Jefferson’s last child. The only child of Thomas Jefferson fitting that description is Lucy Elizabeth.
  • Frederick Muhlenberg, who confronted Alexander Hamilton about the possible financial crimes James Monroe investigated along with Monroe and a man who didn't make it to the fic, Abraham Venable.
  • Chief Justice John Marshall, widely regarded as one of the most influential justices of the Supreme Court, and presided over Aaron Burr's treason trial in real life. In the fic, that treason trial occurred in Aaron's first lifetime, and it's confirmed the third lifetime that Marshall presided over it. Also presides over another trial of Aaron's that makes up a good deal of the third lifetime, making him at least a minor character and likely a supporting one for this lifetime. Not mentioned or important in any other lifetime.
  • Virginia District Judge Cyrus Griffin, who's mentioned once as presiding over Aaron's trial.
  • Edward Livingston, New York and Louisiana's House of Representatives member (not at the same time), Louisiana's Senator, and Andrew Jackson's secretary of state and Minister to France. According to Word of God in the author's notes after the end of chapter 34, there was a supposed scheme Aaron Burr may or may not have known of for him to become president through the House of Representatives tiebreaker vote, and Livingston was supposed to vote Burr to deadlock the New York vote but voted Jefferson last minute. He's a star witness in Aaron's trial which takes up a good deal of this life, which, like Marshall, might make him a minor or supporting character for this lifetime, though he's not mentioned or important in any other lifetime. More specifically, Livingston takes the role of General James Wilkinson in Aaron's first-life treason trial. Like Wilkinson, in this lifetime, Aaron supposedly mailed a letter to Livingston that contained evidence of Aaron's treason, but the letter was written in Livingston's own handwriting instead of Aaron's because he "lost the original." That evidence got thrown out of court.
    Fourth lifetime
  • The Archbishop of Canterbury. Aaron's grandfather asks him to send people to confirm Aaron as the Seer after Aaron turns 4, making it at least February 6, 1760. Aaron meets the Archbishop after he turns 8, making it at least February 6, 1764; and before John Foster becomes headmaster in 1765. Both dates line up with Thomas Secker, who became Archbishop of Canterbury sometime in 1758 and stopped being Archbishop sometime in 1768.
  • Edward Barnard and John Foster, two headmasters of Eton College, with Foster being Barnard's replacement.
  • Henry Townshend may or may not count. According to the author's notes after the end of chapter 36, they found a mention of him being tutored by Edward Barnard, but nothing else. In the fic, he's Aaron's friend-of-proximity and was getting tutored by Barnard before Barnard was replaced with John Foster.
  • Thomas Townshend (the one born in 1733, not his father of the same name born in 1701). Member of the House of Commons, a Whig, knows about Aaron's death-seeing power without Aaron revealing it to him, and presses Aaron for information on the unrest in the colonies and if it turns to war.
