Story and lore:

  • One of Reaper's voice lines ("Doomfist should do his own dirty work.") is now this in light of Orisa's origin story, where Doomfist takes back his own gauntlet.
  • The video "So This Is Basically... Overwatch" made by JelloApocalypse joked that Overwatch's cast lacked diversity because there were no "girl robots." The joke doesn't work as well now that Orisa (an Omnic confirmed to be female) has joined the already diverse cast.
  • One has to wonder if Blizzard named Tracer's girlfriend Emily knowing full well that Tracer was commonly shipped with Widowmaker, aka Amélie Lacroix.note
  • The Honor and Glory short draws some very obvious parallels between young Crusaders-era Reinhardt and the title character of Thor. It just so happened to be released the same day as Thor: Ragnarok, which showed him more grown up, honorable, and missing an eye.
  • At the start of a match, D.Va will sometimes complain at Sombra for giving gamers a bad name, which makes Sombra reply she isn't that kind of hacker. Come Blizzard World, we see a high score table featuring legitimate scores earning no more than triple-digit scores, and "SMB" at the top with 9999 points.
  • The "Dad: 76" and "Mama Mercy" memes — in which Soldier: 76 and Mercy behave in a parental manner toward the younger heroes, especially D.Va — now seem pretty on point since Uprising and the corresponding event have them both canonically expressing concern for the well-being of another nineteen-year-old girl (in this case, a younger Tracer).
  • MEKA is stated to have been built by the government of South Korea, suggesting that Korea is still divided in two by Overwatch's time frame of the mid-2070s — which is thirty years after the date that the two Korean governments hope to be able to reunify into a single state, following new discussions between them several years after Overwatch was released.
  • Symmetra's powers center around her creating Hard Light constructs. Her actress Anjali Bhimani would later play Ruby in Ms. Marvel (2022), in which Kamala Khan's powers were changed from stretching to hard light creation.

Gameplay:

  • For just about any time D.Va gets balanced, her ultimate callout of "Nerf this!" will be sure to elicit some amused reactions from the fanbase. On a related note, the announcement of partnership with Nerf Brand means that they Nerfed the entire series.
  • Symmetra's comic "A Better World" has her using a previously unseen Barrier for her mission. Fast forward three months later, she received a rework that introduced her Photon Barrier.
  • The launch version of D.Va couldn't be close to her mech explosion or she'd die in it, but this was patched out not long after release. Fast forward months later, where D.Va is now so unconcerned about the explosion she takes selfies in front of it.
  • One of the Challenge Tower fights in Mortal Kombat 9 features Stryker, voiced by Matthew Mercer. The name of the challenge? It's "High Noon".
  • The crazy Epileptic Trees about Mercy secretly being evil became this after the Junkenstein's Revenge event, in which Mercy (in her Witch persona) is the true mastermind.
  • The turret-building, (formerly) armor-making, Omnic-hating Torbjörn is fond of the word "Ironclad". In the Season 4 patch, Omnic character Bastion got a new passive called "Ironclad" which boosts his defenses in Tank and Turret configurations.
  • One of Widowmaker's lines in Numbani is her stating that she is not leaving without Doomfist's gauntlet. Come to the Orisa PTR patch, Doomfist's gauntlet is no longer there. Even more hilarious that Widowmaker still states that line even after that patch.
  • Blizzard once said that "hero stacking is a core concept and strategy" in June. Just a month later, a one hero limit was enforced in competitive, and five months later, quick play, after they realized how broken it was. Now, they probably hope no one knows they said this. note
  • As explained on the memes page, players came up with tongue-in-cheek explanations for how Sombra can hack mundane, non-technological abilities such as Soldier: 76's Sprint, the explanation in this case being that she somehow hacks his legs. The Anniversary event gave him a skin with robotic legs, meaning Sombra can indeed disable Sprint by hacking his legs.
  • In the Streamer Showdown between Seagull, Muselk, and game director Jeff Kaplan, there was a round where the participants added captions to a picture (the "meme round"). One of the pictures made had the caption "Vote for me (Jeff) / And I'll release Doomfist"note , and it was the round winner. Guess which hero was announced a bit over a month later.
  • In this video made by known Jeff Kaplan line manipulator Dinoflask, one of the edited lines made by Dinoflask is "we've extended the distance of [Symmetra's] beam, at which it locks on. She's a long range beam sniper now." This becomes hilarious when Moira is released, since not only her main attack locks on to the closest enemy in her sights, her attack beam also have a pretty long range, inadvertently making her the long range beam sniper that "Jeff"/Dinoflask mentioned on that video.
  • The rejection of "Jetpack Cat" due to Blizzard considering it "probably too far" despite everyone on the team loving it became a lot more hilarious since the inclusion of the arguably even-sillier Wrecking Ball, who, as a reminder, is a hamster piloting a rolling/swinging Mini-Mecha.
  • According to this video with Jeff Kaplan, during Sombra's development, they had tested having her stealth be a passive ability when out of combat, but ran into troubles with determining the time duration where it would activate, describing her when the transition was instant to be "pretty much a nightmare." The stealth would initially be released as a cooldown-based ability, but as of June 2018, Blizzard changed their mind following a ton of completely different balance issues and has since made the stealth an infinite passive.
  • Reflection was released in December 2016 with a major Ship Tease between Genji and Mercy. Fast forward nearly a year later, Mercy received a rework in September 2017 that made her much more synergistic with Genji.
  • Reaper received a legendary Lu Bu-themed skin in the same patch he was greatly buffed; Lu Bu was considered the World's Strongest Man of his time (and an infamously overpowered foe in the Dynasty Warriors series).
