Heartwarming / Wish Dragon

Go To

  • Din and Li Na growing up and being the best of friends.
  • Bordering on awesome, Din and Li-Na flying through the city using Long (disguised as a magical dragon costume), enjoying themselves immensely than if they had stayed at that fancy restaurant. And the cherry on top, Li-Na remarking to "Dan" that their date is turning out pretty great thus far. Even the usually cynical Long can't help but smile at this. And the best part: Li-Na may not know it at the time, but she was having the same fun she and Din had all those years ago without even knowing it was Din.
  • Li Na realizing that "Dan" is Din, the instant she sees him without his "rich wish" clothing. Rather than being angry at the deception, she's thrilled to be reunited with her old friend and back in her old neighborhood.
  • Din invites Long into his apartment while he, Li Na, and his friends and family are watching a TV show.
  • When Long sacrifices his life for Din by taking Pocket's golden touch, his invisible form turning to a gold outline reveals an expression, not of fear, not even of sorrow, but of tranquility, a beautifully subtle way of implying he's satisfied with what he's done as long as he knows Din is safe.
  • Long dies and arrives in Heaven, getting everything he ever wanted. But he's only concerned about Din and desperately begs to go back.
    • What convinces the Pipa God to agree? Long justifying it with "My friend needs me!" You can see the shock on the Pipa God's face when he realizes that Long has really come to care for Din as more than just a means to an end like he did at the start.
  • Din using his final wish to bring Mr. Wang back to life. No riches, no forcing Li-Na to be in his life. He just wants Li-Na to have her father back. When Mr. Wang revives, the first thing he sees is Long hovering over him before he disappears, almost as though fate intended for him to know this was Din's doing.
  • After his adventures, Din embracing his mother before she can even start to apologize for what she said earlier about being "realistic". Now that he understands how important family and friends are, Din doesn't waste a moment letting his mom know how much he appreciates her in his life.
    • Notably, instead of her usual ranting or badgering about doing well in school, she's actually gentle and motherly towards Din.
    • Following up on this hug, Din's mother admitting she pushes Din to have a better future because she's worried she doesn't provide for her son enough. To this, Din expresses she's already done enough as a mother, and he's thankful for that.
    • Soon after, the two of them are visited by Li-Na and Mr. Wang, who have now lost everything but are more than happy to move back into the apartments. What's more, Mr. Wang has come to let Din know that he knows it was him and Long who saved his life.
  • Fridge-Heartwarming: Din's father wasn't around for him. Long lost a son (not helped that his son's death was his own doing in the first place). Between the two, Long unwittingly got to be a father figure to Din, while Din became a surrogate son for Long. While not a prevalent theme, this bond is apparent when Long tells Din his backstory in order to better guide the boy to make a wise decision like a true parent.
  • When Din learns Long has to serve ten more masters in order to give him his last wish (revive Mr. Wang), the latter tries to make light of his sacrifice by going into a sour-grapes rant about all the things Heaven doesn't have (shrimp chips, air conditioning, airplanes ect.). Din sees through it all and gives Long a hug to wordlessly thank him. Long reciprocates, unashamed of showing genuine kindness to the boy.
  • At the end, Din could have chosen to keep Long's new teapot and been the first master of his new ten-master cycle. This would give him three more wishes to have anything he wants. However, in keeping with his pureness of heart, Din already has everything he needs. Instead, Din puts the teapot on the Pipa God's cart to allow Long to go to somebody who truly needs his wish-granting services and his new-found wisdom.
    • At one point, Long realized he did his previous nine masters a great disservice by giving them whatever they wanted with careless abandon. Now, he has a chance to give ten more masters what they truly need. And this time, just as he did with Din, he'll hopefully teach them to avoid his mistakes.
