• Near the end of the novel, after the boys have informed Chief Phillip of Charlie's intended plan to orchestrate the Starapple Gully ambush (for context, Chief Phillip knew Charlie had earlier cheated in the race to Lookout Rock during the initiation trials, and just recently Charlie had betrayed the village's secrets to the Redcoats while captured and under torture):
  Chief Phillip: There never was a braver boy than Charlie. I am proud of him.
