• Near the end of the novel, while the Maroons are preparing to ambush the Redcoats, Tommy and his friends are hiding in the trees when he observes David grinning at him from his hiding place.
  Tommy: The Englishmen will surely see your big teeth when they enter Starapple Gully.
  David: They will think I am a tree with teeth, like the one in the Anancy story.
  Johnny: I've never heard that story before.
  David: Once upon a time...
  Uriah: Once upon a time, there was a war. Shut up!
