A very subtle one happens earlier as Kowalksi and Stone are on the way to the ISS. Kowalksi is doing his best to take Stone's mind off of their predicament, asking her what she does, where she lives, talking about the beauty of space and annoying her with the country music he likes to play over their radios. The instant Stone tells him about her daughter, he cuts the music and the small talk to listen to her.
Stone's Despair Event Horizon and subsequent visit from Kowalski's spirit/hallucinatory image, which urges her to keep fighting. She does.
