    Seven-Spotted Ladybug
  • The Moss family is extremely dysfunctional, but they clearly all love each other.
  • Matilda ambitiously sets out to win a date with Luke, a handsome jock in her class, and instead ends up with her first actual friend.
  • Nicholas and Matilda discuss their boundaries going forward, as Matilda hated having to hug their father and is hoping that now that he's gone, she won't be expected to hug anyone else. It should be noted that throughout the season, Nicholas repeatedly avoids encroaching on Matilda's personal space.

    Green Bottle Blue Tarantula
  • After Genevieve breaks down crying when her crush Leonard offers his condolences, Tellulah and Barb leave class to sit with her for a while. They may be jerks, but they are her friends after all.
  • Nicholas shares his bug collection with Alex, showing both that he trusts Alex and that he cares a lot about his bugs.
  • After dislocating his finger, Nicholas remains at the house, because he wants to be there when Matilda and Genevieve get home. Genevieve concedes that it was a nice thought, even if horribly misguided.
    • Upon finding out Nicholas has been injured, Matilda and Genevieve both spring into action, with Matilda searching for the first-aid kit and Genevieve calling for a driver to take them to the hospital.

    Giant Asian Mantises
  • While drunk, Alex cheerfully braids Matilda's hair.
  • When Barb seems to be suffering an overdose, Genevieve chooses to risk punishment by going and fetching Nicholas and Alex for help.
  • At the end of the episode, Nicholas presents Genevieve with a birthday gift - a ring that belonged to her late mother, which he has thoughtfully turned into a necklace so that she can wear it without Tellulah and Barb making fun of her.

    Silkmoths
  • In order to cheer up Nicholas, Matilda and Genevieve redecorate the master bedroom so that it is more distinctly his.
Genevieve:Um, sorry the room is so gay. Matilda just thought it was really funny.

    West African Giant Black Millipedes
  • Nicholas makes an ass of himself in front of Alex's friend Lyndsey because he'd promised not to bring up her dead brother, which is unfortunate, because Lyndsey keeps bringing it up. While Lyndsey is initially pissed at both Nicholas and Alex for the perceived insensitivity, after Alex explains that Nicholas was trying to keep his promise, she concedes that anyone who is that stupidly loyal is probably okay.
  • While she is horribly misguided about it, Genevieve was still fully prepared to pick a fight with the guy who she thinks took advantage of Matilda.
  • Luke had rejected Matilda's romantic overtures earlier, but he is still visibly appalled at his buddy Zane for taking advantage of her.

    Harvester Ants
  • Nicholas is a terrible, terrible legal guardian in most respects, but this episode makes it clear that he is on his sisters' side, as he fights to prevent Genevieve from being suspended and tries to work out how to appropriately support Matilda as she seeks more independence.
  • As Drea expresses her disappointment with kissing Jeremy in the previous episode, Matilda implicitly offers to kiss her as a basis to form a comparison.

    Blue Death-Feigning Beetles
  • The premise of the episode sees Nicholas setting up a video conference so that he can keep his mother company while she undergoes surgery. Throughout the episode, everyone takes turns talking to her.
  • When Drea introduces her support dog Duke, Nicholas assumes that he's not supposed to pet Duke while he's at work. When Drea explains that Duke's job is cuddle her when she's overstimulated, and thus being petted is part of his job description, Nicholas is delighted.
  • Nicholas and Genevieve argue about whether or not to tell Matilda that she got into Juilliard. While they have very different perspectives about the matter, it's clear that both of them are trying to do what they think is best for Matilda.
  • Matilda ends up falling asleep in Drea's arms.

    Maggots
  • Genevieve spends the whole episode trying to shield Tellulah from the consequences of their latest bit of stupid behavior. She fails, of course, but the fact that she cared enough to try has to count for something.
  • Drea teaches Matilda a technique for managing her anxiety about being touched so that they can actually be intimate.

    Monarch Butterflies
  • After some false starts, Matilda and Drea become a very cute couple. They even go to the prom together, with Nicholas, Alex, and Sam finding Drea a prom dress that she can comfortably wear.
  • After losing his temper at Genevieve and Matilda and dumping them in the middle of town, Nicholas soon apologizes to them, and decides to take them on a nature hike so that they can work out their differences with each other.
  • In the stinger, Alex can be seen roaming the house, lovingly caring for Nicholas' bugs while he and the girls are away.

    Discoid Cockroaches
  • Despite her misgivings about the plan, Sam gave Matilda instructions on how to use the subway, which Matilda dutifully follows.
  • Matilda's first stop in New York City? St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, the former residence of Amy Beach, a female composer who is speculated to have been autistic. Matilda treats the place like sacred ground.
  • Genevieve tells a long story about Matilda's many quirks and habits that becomes a story about how much she loves her sister and how proud she is of her.
  • After realizing that Matilda keeps buying his hotdogs every time she passes him, the hotdog vendor gives her one for free during her solo run.

    Gray Bird Grasshopper
  • How does Genevieve get Matilda to come out of her room and stop sulking? She cuts her own finger. Matilda's Big Sister Instinct immediately kicks in and she runs to get the first-aid kit. When she's done wrapping a band-aid around Genevieve's finger, she kisses it. Afterwards, she starts acting more like her usual self.

    Jungle Centipede
  • While Suze and Toby may be incredibly weird people, they do deeply care about their daughter.

    Emperor Scorpion
  • On the anniversary of Darren's death, Genevieve and Matilda write letters to him, with Matilda reaffirming her commitment to doing her best and Genevieve taking comfort in the hope that her dad might finally get his chance to meet John Lennon in the afterlife. Alex also writes a letter thanking Darren for making him feel so welcome during their brief encounter.
  • Matilda agrees to join Genevieve in bed for the night so that she doesn't have to sleep alone on the anniversary of their dad's death.
  • Alex helps Nicholas open up about his feelings about his father, and helps him set boundaries with Penny after she calls up simply to bitch about Darren.

    Cave Cockroach
  • Genevieve finally decides to "put herself out there" by posting vlogs on the Internet, which leads to a number of benefits, as she discovers new ways to communicate with Nicholas and Alex and learns that there's a boy in her class who has a crush on her. Two boys, in fact.
  • Matilda and Drea reconcile, as Drea, no longer fearing that Matilda will dump her, confesses that she wasn't really interested in a sexual relationship, but did want a romantic one. Matilda was actually okay with the romantic part, and thus they both decide to be girlfriends again.

    California Banana Slugs
  • Nicholas actually tries to apologize to Alex for being such an ass to him the previous episode.
  • Nicholas and Drea hang out together while Matilda is with Ian, with Drea explaining asexuality to Nicholas and Nicholas discussing why he became an entomologist.
    • While their conversation is mostly friendly, Drea refuses to get onboard with Nicholas' efforts to shut down Matilda's hook-up with Ian, saying that while it hurts having to share Matilda with others, they had an agreement about how they were going to conduct their relationship and she will honor that agreement because she loves Matilda.
  • Genevieve receives a gift from Oscar, and calls him to thank him for it. This leads to a long conversation between them that culminates in Oscar finally asking Genevieve out on a date.
  • At the end of an incredibly awkward, uncomfortable night, Matilda and Drea burn sage to cast out the last vestiges of Ian, allowing Matilda to demonstrate to Drea that their relationship is the one that matters to her.

    Regal Jumping Spider
  • Genevieve goes out on her first date with Oscar.
  • After a disastrous night in the cabin that has left Drea convinced that she and Matilda will never be able to make it on their own, Matilda reassures her that even if they can't be like other couples, she won't leave her. She also plays the piano for Drea, which is also the first time we've seen her play this season.

    Woolly Bear Caterpillar
  • Matilda is entirely sincere in her desire to ask Drea to marry her, even as everyone else is convinced that it's a terrible idea.
  • Hoping to smooth things over with Matilda after shooting down her plans to propose to Drea, Nicholas takes her to the family safe deposit box, where he shows her all the plans their father put in place to provide for her and Genevieve's future. He also gives her her late mother's wedding ring, hoping to impress upon her how important it is that she consider her intentions with Drea. While she ends up mistaking this for him giving her his blessing, it does lead to her giving him a delighted hug for the first time in the entire series.
  • Genevieve asks for help in dealing with Barb's latest bit of attention-seeking stupidity, with Nicholas suggesting that she cut Barb off, while Alex counsels her to try and reach out to Barb instead. For once, Genevieve listens to Alex and tries to call Barb.

    Banded Argiope Spider
  • Genevieve spends the day trying to cheer up a depressed Barb, even risking Matilda's ire by trying to blow off her latest scheme in order to hang out with Barb. It takes a while, but Barb does appreciate the effort.
  • Matilda propose to Drea, and Drea says yes.

    Carolina Sphinx Moth
  • Quirky as they are, when Suze and Toby find Nicholas crying in the cabin over Alex dumping him, they immediately try to comfort him.
  • In the wake of Nicholas and Alex's breakup, Matilda still gives Alex an invitation to the wedding, not because, as he fears, she sees him as some guy her brother dated, but because she sees him as one of her best friends.
  • Genevieve is at first dismissive of the possibility that Nicholas is autistic because she assumes that after a lifetime of living with Matilda, she knows everything there is to know about autism, but then actually does the research and realizes that she only knows everything there is to know about Matilda. She then comes back and helps Nicholas take a self-diagnostic test, and tries to help him cope with the realization that he's on the spectrum.
  • Matilda is initially angry at Nicholas for self-diagnosing his autism, because she sees self-diagnosis as the refuge of people who just want a quick an easy excuse to avoid accountability for their behavior. But when Nicholas actually explains the emotional reasons why he believes that he's autistic, she immediately accepts this, recognizing that the feelings he has are the same ones she's had her whole life.

    Gulf Fritillary Butterfly
  • After spending the whole episode refusing to read the speech that Matilda wrote for her, assuming that it's just a narcissistic hagiography about Matilda, Genevieve finally does read it at the wedding itself, and finds out that it is a narcissistic hagiography... about Genevieve herself. Matilda is acutely aware of how much Genevieve has done for her over the years, and on the biggest day of her life, she wanted everyone to know how much she owes to her little sister.
  • Matilda and Drea, having spent their whole lives being watched over by other people, and having spent their short engagement period being scrutinized by their loved ones, arrange things so that the exchange of vows happens under a literal veil of secrecy, with the vows being drowned out by a chorus girl's singing, allowing them to have one moment in their relationship that's private.
