Will's Mum and Mr Gilbert
Why exactly does Will's Mum get into a relationship with Mr Gilbert? He's the guy who's been treating her son with nothing but contempt for the past two years - in the work experience episode, she even complained to him about this. Other than the fact that it provided the writers with a reason to bring Greg Davies back for one last scene, this doesn't make sense.
- Will's Mum is a ridiculously Horrible Judge of Character. She believes Donovan is a nice guy despite him making objectifying comments within earshot of her and looking too rough to be hanging out with her posh son.
- It's also a Call-Back to where Gilbert notes that Will's mum is very much his type. And since he's also seen buying a Teddy bear for someone a few episodes previously, coupled with the fact that he can loosen up on holidays, he's probably only an asshole during school hours.

. That's actually a pretty good university. Given that Will A) isn't as clever as he thinks he is, B) failed one of his exams due to shitting himself, and C) was repeatedly threatened with a negative university application reference by Mr. Gilbert, how did he get into such a fine institution?

- His dad is obviously well-off. Maybe Will dropped his name in order to sweeten the deal?
- Will is only "not as clever as he thinks he is" in terms of street smarts- his book smarts are probably as good as he thinks they are. Plus, the exam he shat himself in was AS level, not A2, the one put on your UCAS form. You give up one subject at the end of AS so it's possible he just tanked the one subject.
