Headscratchers / Suspiria (2018)

  • Mmes Tanner and Huller vote to retain Markos as coven leader in the off-screen election, so why does Death harmlessly brush their faces as opposed to popping their heads like the others who voted for Markos?
    • Miss Tanner is very close to Mme Blanc, so I guess that's why Death just brushes her off. Miss Huller dies in the sabbath; it's actually Miss Vendegast, who voted Blanc, we see escorting Dr. Klemperer out of the Tanzakademie afterwards. It does not help that Huller and Vendegast look so much alike.
      • Mme Tanner showed a lot of compassion to Susie and the other girls despite very much being an extension of Markos' cruelty, and yet we don't see her actually executing any violence on the girls (unlike the Matrons shown with the spikes and Olga - even Vendegast who doesn't actually do anything other than manage the situation seems to get a grim delight out of it) and I think this explains why Death spares her. I also think that Susie is interested in maintaining some sort of system at the academy while seemingly leaving in the stinger scene post-credits. What I wish was more clear is whether or not Mme Balfour survives the climactic scene. We don't see her anymore after she's singing at the center of the ritual; she voted for Blanc, so one would imagine she survived, but she was also quite cruel in many ways to the girls. I find it pointed that we do not clearly see her in any of the scenes in the Epilogue - it's certainly not clear if she's helping to clean up The Room of Feasts or not, at any event.
    • Miss Tanner is the witness. Just as the coven planned to torment Klemperer as witness to their crimes, Suspiriorum leaves Tanner alive so someone remains who knows what happened in the coven of Markos.

  • It seems like there is a geo-political allegory happening on top of everything else. The nationalities of the characters and their fates seem to mirror (post)World War 2 international relations.

  • It seems like Olga and Caroline are magically targeted to transfer their unique dancing strengths magically into Susie. Was this necessary or effective in the end, given that she was Mother Suspiriorum?

  • Is Caroline meant to be a trans character?

  • What was the purpose of the matrons collecting urine from their chosen dancers?
    • In terms of witchcraft, body fluids like urine or blood can act as some sort of conduit to control/curse someone. The same goes for the hair. That is why Patricia worriedly mentions that they have them. Also, if you notice, the coven cuts Susie’s hair just before the Volk dance/ritual.
