Funny / The World of Suzie Wong

Go To

  • Suzie's very first scene where Robert is nearly mistaken for stealing her purse. When the purse is returned she checks the money in it.
Robert: You don't seriously think I took anything?
Suzie: Not now. Money all here.
Robert: You're the most exasperating girl I've ever met.
Suzie: We not meet. I don't talk to strangers.
  • Suzie 'forgets' what the word for a woman who hasn't made love is - and then 'remembers', excitedly saying "virgin!" at the top of her voice.
Robert: It's not the kind of thing one goes about shouting on a ferry boat.
Suzie: I'm proud to be good girl.
  • And when Robert first asks Suzie to pose for him, she's offended that's all he wants of her - claiming her girlfriends will think she's slipping if she goes to a man's room and all she does is sit. Robert gets her to stay by saying they'll think that anyway if she goes back to the bar so soon.
  • When Suzie asks if Robert wants her naked.
Robert: No, I've never tried nudes.
    [cheeky grin from Suzie]
    Suzie: Good time to try.
  • Suzie is also brilliant after she first meets Kay.
    Suzie: She a virgin?
Robert: Well if you wait a minute, I'll ask.
Suzie: Never mind, you'll find out.
  • The innuendo-laden scene where Kay finds Suzie in Robert's room. He tries to explain that she's just his model, and he told her not to wait in the room for him. Suzie also says she doesn't mind if Kay stays.
  • Gwennie Lee asks Robert to take her into the bar so she can work. Once inside she happily says "everything nice and legal now".
  • The book has a great moment where Suzie introduces one of her clients to Robert while he's painting. The two men get into a heated debate about communism - and discover that Suzie has gotten bored and gone to bed when they're finished. The sailor then reveals he doesn't mind, since he's gay and only took Suzie upstairs to brag to his friends.
