Tear Jerker / The World of Suzie Wong

Go To

  • Suzie being attacked by an aggressive client. Although she tries to fight him off, by the time she shows up at Robert's door she has a bloody lip and seems traumatised by it.
  • After being told Ben wants to get back with his wife and didn't have the balls to tell Suzie in person, she tries to brush it off like it doesn't affect her. But then she retreats back into the fantasy she told Robert when they first met.
Suzie: My name Mei Ling. My father very rich man. I not dirty street girl. I not dirty street girl.
  • The sad reveal that both Kay and her father are just as racist and snobbish as their high-society friends.
  • The funeral for Suzie's son. Among the objects burned on the pyre are a bridge for him to cross into the Celestial Garden, a private sampan for him to live in, a rickshaw so he'll never have to walk anywhere and Suzie finally gets Robert to write a letter of recommendation so he can go anywhere and get a good job.
  • Suzie sings a Chinese song about a male cloud rejected by the female cloud he loves because she doesn't think he has a "good heart". Robert makes a snarky comment about it, and you can see that Suzie is momentarily hurt by this.
    "Do you not believe?"
    • It's also Harsher in Hindsight considering the song parallels the romance that develops between them, and Suzie leaving Robert because he was rude to her. The climax likewise happens in the middle of a downpour.
  • Suzie's life overall has been one big Trauma Conga Line - getting thrown out at the age of ten and having to get by on her own as a prostitute and having a baby all by the time she turns eighteen. In the book she's even worse, where an uncle tried to molest her and a client told her he'd marry her after getting her pregnant but turned around and dumped her.
  • Robert's utter guilt after he scares Suzie away, and walks around Hong Kong looking for her. The Gray Rain of Depression falls, and he's obviously beside himself with worry.
