- Guy gets Put on a Bus between chapters five and eleven. Later, after Guy has reappeared but been absent for several chapters, Sir Walter Scott-as-narrator lampshades that it's time he comes back, "lest our readers should fear they are to lose sight of him for another quarter of a century."
- MacMorlan has to get a new suit of clothes for the Dominie. This is easier said than done, because if he just gives the Dominie money and sends him to buy his own clothes he'll end up wearing something ridiculous. So MacMorlan hires an artist to take the Dominie's measurements from a distance, then gets a tailor to make him two suits of clothes, then hides the new clothes in the Dominie's room while he's asleep. The Dominie doesn't seem to realise he's been given new clothes, and only comments on how much his old ones have changed.
