- What Could Have Been: In the introduction to the 1829 edition, Sir Walter Scott said he originally intended to write a story about the supernatural. He changed his mind soon after he started work on the novel, which is why astrology and fortune-telling feature in the early chapters but are practically forgotten later in the book.
