The Books

  • In the second book, Clarity knows her mother, Gloria, won't like having a dog in the house, so she hides her new puppy (Bailey, aka a female named Molly). When the puppy yips in the middle of the night, Clarity tells Gloria that a fox has found its way into the house and that she'll let it out. Not long after, Bailey finds his way out of the hiding place, and runs up to Gloria just as she's speaking to a truancy officer. Gloria screams and yells "That's not a fox!" The truancy officer replies, "A fox? Of course not, it's a puppy."
  • Also a lot of Bailey's inner monologue. It's funny to see things from his point of view.

A Dog's Purpose (Film)

  • Todd makes fun of Ethan, so Bailey runs between his legs to trip him, and Ethan comments that Bailey's laughing at Todd. Todd responds, "Dogs can't laugh," while Bailey, meanwhile, giggles and thinks, "That was funny."
  • Hannah looks at Bailey and compliments what intelligent eyes he has. Bailey's inner monologue? Not so intelligent.
    Bailey: My butt itches.
  • When Ethan gets dizzy and ready to throw up from the roller coaster ride, Bailey thinks that Ethan's in trouble and accidentally knocks over a hot dog stand to get to him. Bailey eats 28 hot dogs (which Ethan pays for) and ends up getting gassy.
  • Tino's owner tries to teach him out to fetch. She takes him out to the park, and tosses a ball. Tino snarks about wasting his time running and decides to rest on the ground. He then decides to fetch the ball, only to deliver it to another dog.
  • Bailey can't really understand the concept of what a donkey is. The closest he ever comes is "Horse-Dog."
  • Bailey mistakenly believes the cat "wants to be a dog".
Bailey: It's not my fault he couldn't be a dog.
    • Another scene with the cat crosses over into Black Comedy. The cat passes away, and the owners bury him in the front yard. Bailey, who doesn't realize that the cat's dead, goes outside, sniffs the body out, digs up the cat's body, and brings it into the house just to show them that he's found the cat. Elizabeth screams, and Bailey mutters "Sorry" before taking the cat's body back outside.
  • When Bailey is in his life as Tino the corgi, his owner, Maya, is having a panic attack and, without realizing it, drags poor Tino behind her much quicker than he can move.
Tino: Slow down! Slow down! My legs are barely legs!
  • This exchange.
Maya: Can't you be my boyfriend?
Tino: Can't you give me more ice cream?
  • Also in the same reincarnation, Tino allowing Maya's kids to chase him and dress him up. What's especially funny, it's only out of reluctance.
  • When Bailey is reincarnated as Buddy and returns to the farm where Ethan lives, he still identifies the donkey as "Horse Dog". Some things never change.

A Dog's Journey (Film)

  • Toddler CJ is playing a tea party game with Buddy. Buddy keeps shrugging the cup she offers him away and says, "There's nothing in that cup."
  • This part after Buddy and Ethan perform their "back-jump" trick, due to their old age.
Buddy: That isn't getting any easier.
  • Buddy thinks that Gloria wants to play with the family in the kiddie pool (she's actually trying to take CJ away from Buddy and Ethan, the latter saying that they're having fun), so he pushes her into the pool from behind. A confused Buddy then mutters, "Or not".
  • Buddy always thinking Gloria (who's often talking on the phone) is always "talking to her hand".
  • When Buddy reunites with a slightly older CJ as Molly, Buddy remarks in his monologue "CJ was a gigantic baby now."
    • A giggling CJ calling the overenthusiastic Molly "Psycho puppy".
