"What are birds? We just don't know." The Birds of Britain extra reveals that in the LAY verse, birds have only been around since 1962. Since the show is set in the 70s, it makes sense that they don't know much about a recently arrived species.

The winner of the "futuristic song" competition is the one that best flatters the early-80s idea of futuristic music, but it's also the one that most closely resembles real popular music in the year 2000. Not sure what this proves, but anyway...
