At the beginning of the film, Fitz wonders whether they'll get out of town alive if they win the money. Gabriel says that the difference between a simple hustler and a true conman is that a hustler flees town, while a conman can leave any time he likes. In the end, sure enough, Gillon tries to command the sheriff to mobilize the deputies and organize road blocks to catch Gabriel's crew when they try to skip town, but by this point Gillon has lost all his money and his power. Gabriel can leave the town at his leisure.
