Many of the seemingly poor design features of the Salvare, e.g. an exotic matter reactor that can only be shutoff from inside the containment chamber, can be attributed to the speed with which it was completed.
Although the Salvare crew behave unprofessionally and appear unqualified for their critical mission, they are in fact the best humanity has to offer at this point in time. Because human civilizations have been devastated by Earth's environmental degradation; the personnel, knowledge and institutions which would develop crew members viewers would consider professional and qualified by early 21st Century standards are all gone.
