Where the North Begins is a 1923 silent film. It was the first film to star canine actor Rin Tin Tin, who had had minor roles in two previous films.

Rin Tin Tin plays the Wolf-Dog, a domestic dog raised by wolves in the Canadian wilderness. Meanwhile, amongst the humans, the crooked Shad Galloway sends his employee and romantic rival Gabriel Dupre on a mission to deliver some furs to Skagway. Galloway then sends a ruthless assassin, "The Fox," after Gabriel in order to eliminate him and steal the furs that he's carrying. However, Galloway and "The Fox" didn't count on the interference of... the Wolf-Dog.

This film has the examples of:

  • And That's Terrible: The intertitles twice feel the need to attach the adjective "evil" to Galloway's actions, just in case you haven't gotten the message yet.
  • Babies Ever After: At the end, the Wolf-Dog returns with a mate and puppies.
  • Canadian Western: Set in the Canadian wilderness with French-Canadian fur trapper Gabriel Dupre as the human protagonist.
  • Common Law Marriage: Galloway lives with a woman named Marie, whom the locals "tactfully" refer to as his housekeeper. The implication being, of course, that they're living in sin, which is clearly something only a horrible villain like Galloway would do.
  • Disney Villain Death: The Wolf-Dog ultimately sends Galloway off a cliff to his death.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: A Justified Trope. After they get back to civilization, the Wolf-Dog is able to recognize "The Fox" by his scent.
  • Frame-Up: After his initial plan to kill Gabriel fails, Galloway goes with a backup plan of planting the stolen furs in Gabriel's home.
  • Heroic Dog: The Wolf-Dog starts off rescuing Gabriel from the frozen wilderness, and it goes from there.
  • Love Triangle: Gabriel Dupre and his evil boss Shad Galloway both want the lovely Felice McTavish, not that she ever demonstrates any interest in Galloway.
  • Interspecies Adoption: As a puppy, the Wolf-Dog is adopted by a wolf pack.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Galloway's original plan is to knock off Gabriel Dupre, his rival for the love of Felice McTavish.
