The Farm is a 2018 American horror film written and directed by Hans Stjernswärd.

The story is about a young couple on a road trip taking a wrong turn on the highway and ending up in a small community in the middle of nowhere. After resting there overnight, the two end up in cages when they wake up. They've been trapped and are treated like animals at this farm. When they realize that the farmers have nefarious intentions, they must escape this farm before it's too late.

The film stars Nora Yessayan, Alec Gaylord, and Ken Volok.

Previews: Trailer 1, Trailer 2.

Tropes

  • Agony of the Feet: Alec gets his feet caught in a bear trap when he and Nora try to escape.
    • The main poster (on your right) also shows a male diorama without their feet.
  • Bound and Gagged: All of the caged people experience this.
  • Cannibal Clan: Not a group, not a family, but an entire community.
  • Death of a Child: Not even infants are safe, as one is weighed, then killed.
  • Despair Event Horizon: When Nora asks Ashley how they get out of the farm, she replies with "You don't". Granted, she does try to escape, but it presents the idea that some accept that they'll never escape.
  • Downer Ending: Despite their best efforts, Nora and Ashley get captured by the commune and the final shot, is cooked and prepared like roasted pigs. The commune gets away scot-free and continues their nefarious practices.
  • Eerie Anatomy Model: Two posters depict a male and a female diorama with details showing specific pieces of the human, in a reference to a pig or cow diorama with where their parts are. Although, the male diorama is used frequently in releases.
  • Hope Spot: The movie has two big instances. One is when Nora and Alec successfully escape, only for Alec to step into a bear trap. The approaching farmers force Nora to abandon him, and he gets his head crushed by a rock. The second is when Nora and Ashley make it to the bus, they start it, only for the farmers to catch up to them.
  • I Am a Humanitarian: The entire community are cannibals, and the people who eat at the diner might be eating human meat in their burgers, although this is less likely considering the farm is having trouble supplying sufficient human meat for their catering business.
  • Karma Houdini: The entire community never faces repercussions for their operations.
  • "Last Supper" Steal: The final shot of the movie has some of the farmers attending a dinner in weird poses, almost mirroring The Last Supper.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The trailer suggests that the farm captures Nora and Alec because they ate meat. In reality, the commune simply captures people unfortunate to be sleeping in the bed and breakfast. They only choose burgers as their dining option because it was what the waitress recommended.
  • People Farms: The farm uses humans for meat and dairy production. Those in captivity are even treated like livestock.
  • Sealed Room in the Middle of Nowhere: The farm and the community are in the middle of nowhere.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: "On My Land" is a song that has a calming tone, yet it is played in one of the more disturbing moments of the film.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The first trailers show a lot of scenes of the deaths and even a clip of the ending. Although, the second trailer tones this down.
  • You're Drinking Breast Milk: Played for Horror, and intentional. The farm's choice of obtaining milk and dairy.
