The Deep House is a 2021 French (English-language) supernatural Horror film, starring James Jagger, Camille Rowe, and Eric Savin. The film was written and directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury.

A young tourist couple, Ben (Jagger) and and Tina (Rowe) are trekking through Europe, visiting old ruins with purported supernatural occurrences, and documenting their progress on social media. While in the southwest of France, and at the suggestion of a mysterious local Pierre (Savin), they venture to see a mysterious lake, not marked on any map, that has a perfectly preserved house at the bottom. Deciding to scuba dive to explore the house, they venture into the depths of the lake. However, unbeknownst to them, their presence awakens a dark spirit that haunts the place.

The film was originally released in France in June of 2021 by Apollo Films, before being picked up for American distribution by Blumhouse Productions and MGM+.

Tropes in this film include:

  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: The Montégnacs.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Tina's mother was French.
  • Creepy Child: The Montégnacs' daughter Sarah.
  • Downer Ending: Ben is killed by the ghosts and Tina manages to leave the house, but drowns just before being able to reach the surface. Pierre continues to bring divers to the house to be killed.
  • Haunted House: The entire premise of the film is essentially "haunted house, but underwater."
  • Hollywood Satanism: While it's unclear whether the Montégnacs are ghosts or some type of revenant zombie, Satanic worship seems to be the reason for their present state of undeath.
  • Hope Spot: Tina escapes the house, but can't hold her breath long enough to reach the surface.
  • In-Universe Soundtrack: Once they're comfortable underwater, Sarah asks Ben to turn on some music. He does this via the device on his wrist.
  • "Join Us" Drone: Played with. While possessed by Sarah, Ben tries to convince Tina to join the Montégnac family.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Pierre is the son of Mister and Madame Montégnac, meaning that he led Ben and Tina to his old home on purpose.
  • Ominous Visual Glitch: Occurs occasionally when the image onscreen is being viewed through "Tom," the drone.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Literally, the first rule of any travel to any destination when you are a tourist—especially if it's outside of your native country—is to tell people where you are going, how long you expect to be there, and when you will be back. You also tell them that if they haven't heard from you within a specified amount of time, contact the authorities or another person who should know where you are or where you were when you didn't respond. Ben and Tina die of stupidity and nothing else, trusting one person they don't really know that well with those incredibly vital facts.
  • Underwater Ruins: The titular house sits at the bottom of the lake, collecting algae. However, it's much less of a ruin than it should be, which prompts Ben and Tina to document it.
  • You Bastard!: Ben says this when he discovers the family tree revealing Pierre as the Montégnacs' son.
Ben: "Pierre, you bastard. You're the Montégnacs' son."
