Tropes for the film:

  • Discovering Your Own Dead Body: When Dan Merrick dredges up the preserved corpse of Jack Stanton, he discovers that its face looks exactly like his. He then realizes that he's not Dan Merrick at all, but Jack Stanton, who's suffered Laser-Guided Amnesia and underwent Magic Plastic Surgery after a car wreck.
  • The Film of the Book: Based on Richard Neely's novel The The Plastic Nightmare.
  • One-Word Title: Shattered.
  • Surgical Impersonation: The amnesiac variant. Dan Merrick wakes up after an accident with full amnesia, and later discovers he's not the person everyone thinks he is.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Dan Merrick survives a car accident with amnesia. Along the way, he discovers that his wife Judith was having an affair. She explains that she didn't say anything because she didn't want him to remember killing her lover Jack. When Dan finds Jack's corpse, it's actually his own face. It turns out that he is Jack, and the dead man is Dan. He looks like Dan now because after the car accident, the doctors repaired his face to look like the photos of Merrick that they believed he was.
  • Taking You with Me: Judith tries this with Jack in the climax; emphasis on tries. Jack gets out of the car in time.
