Lauren Stone is a disgraced exobiologist who is on probation for drinking and driving. The military show up at her door to inform her that a meteorite has landed in a small town in northern Pennsylvania, emitting a toxin that has killed everyone. Lauren and colleague David Santiago are on the case. Their case leads to small red plants, dead bodies that get up and move around, and Lauren's own angst.
Not to be confused with the biblical drama Risen (2016), or Risen the video game.
Risen provides examples of:
- Cassandra Truth: When Laura learns online that there was possibly a Russian coverup of the same thing years ago, she informs the US Army. Instead of asking US intelligence to check in with Russia to see if they previously stopped this potentially world-ending problem, they shake their heads at her because she got the information off of the Internet.
- Fatal Family Photo: Santiago is introduced looking at pictures of his kids, and tells Lauren about them on the trip to the site.
- Hollywood Science: Lauren's got a doctorate, so of course she limits her actual science work to searching the Internet and reading comment sections.
- Hostile Terraforming: This is the aliens plan.
- Dull Surprise: Lauren's standard expression.
- The Mountains of Illinois: Or rather the plains of central Pennsylvania. The road they take to the meteor site would look more at home in Antarctica.
- Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: The actress playing a young Lauren does not have an American accent.
- Tomato Surprise: Lauren has been "programmed" by an alien at Area 51, and is indeed "Supernova 94". She's the one who told the aliens where we were in the first place. Lauren knew this, her father knew this, and the government knew this - which is why they brought he in in the first place.
