Tropes for the film:

  • Alliterative Name: Charlene Coke.
  • Arc Words: "What makes a person want to be paralyzed who isn't?"
  • Freudian Excuse: Fiona has body integrity dysphoria with a wish to become paralyzed out of guilt over the accident she caused years ago which had killed Isaac's parents while he was left paralyzed.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: James Frain, Joshua Leonard, and Kate Burton previously worked with Dylan Bruno on NUMB3RS.
  • Tagline:"A strange new American dream".
  • Throwing Off the Disability: Isaac finds he can walk (though with difficulty) while wearing certain shoes. He can't understand how that could be at first. Fiona tells him he's really suffering hysterical paralysis-there's no damage to his spine. By the end of the film, he's begun walking again with a cane full time, proving she's right.
  • Welcome to Hell: After Fiona, upon using a wheelchair out in public the first time, remarks on how long getting a taxi took, Isaac snarks:
Isaac: Welcome to hell. I'll introduce you to the staff.
