Go To

A 1987 American drama directed by Martin Ritt that has a call-girl (Barbra Streisand) taking her right to stand trial for murder than be declared legally insane.

The movie also stars Richard Dreyfuss, Maureen Stapleton, Karl Malden, Eli Wallach, Robert Webber, James Whitmore, Leslie Nielsen (in what turned out to be his last performance in a serious movie before he started exclusively doing comedies), William Prince, and Dakin Matthews.

It was released on December 11, 1987.

Tropes for the film:

  • The Film of the Play: Based on the play of the same name by Tom Topor.
  • Going Commando: Claudia, while clad only in a hospital gown, shows the goods to her lawyer and dares him to look, mentioning that she flashed her shrink and he did not even look.
  • Insanity Defense: Averted when Claudia demands they declare her sane. The film note (accurately) that if a defendent is declared insane, the person can be kept locked up for life, even for a crime that would only entail a few years in prison.
  • One-Word Title: Nuts.
  • Tagline: "Mad As In Angry. Or Just Plain... NUTS".
  • Time-Shifted Actor: Hayley Taylor and Stacy Bergman play younger versions of Claudia Draper.
